Surabaya is the capital of Java Timur. With its 2.7 million inhabitants, it is after Jakarta the second largest city Indonesia.
Districts
The city is divided into 5 districts with 31 administrative districts:
- center: Tegalsari - Simokerto - Genteng - Bubutan
- north: Bulak - Kenjeran - Semampir - Pabean Cantikan - Krembangan
- east: Gubeng - Gunung Anyar - Sukolilo - Tambaksari - Mulyorejo - Rungkut - Tenggilis Mejoyo
- south: Wonokromo - Wonocolo - Wiyung - Karang Pilang - Jambangan - Gayungan - Dukuh Pakis - Sawahan

Surabaya is considered to be a clean and well-organized city by Indonesian standards, which is quite obvious compared to Jakarta. In terms of tourism, however, the economic and administrative metropolis has only moderately much to offer. The traffic jam situation is better than in Jakarta, since there is no metro, tram or anything else, getting ahead is very difficult. Surabaya is only interesting for travelers who want to get an idea of how Indonesians typically live today.

By train
The advantage of the train over buses is that it goes all the way to the city center. This is a great way to get around the notoriously congested streets of Surabaya. Surabaya has two main train stations:
- 2 Stasiun Pasar Turi: Here the trains go to Jakarta from.
- 3 Stasiun Surabaya Gubeng: Here the trains go to Banding and Yogyakarta from.
By bus
The 4 Bus terminal Purabaya is outside the center in the south of the city. From here there are regular intercity buses in all directions. The city center can be reached with the Damri buses, depending on the traffic situation, you can expect up to 2 hours of travel time.
