Shalif - a city in northern Algeria, the administrative center of Wilai Ash-Shalif. The city is located about 200 km west of the country's capital, Algiers. It is situated on the left bank of the Wadi al-Shalif.
The former names of the city are El Asnam, Orléansville (in the French era), and Castelum Tinginitum (in the Roman era). Shalif is the tenth largest city in Algeria in terms of population. It has about 295 thousand. inhabitants (2008).
Catastrophic earthquakes occurred in the city between 1954 and 1980.
The ASO Chlef football club, which currently plays in the 1st Algerian league, is located in the city.
