Szécsény [sEĉEnj] is a small historic town and tourist destination in the northern part of Hungary.

Understand

Szécsény is located in a valley of the border river Ipoly (Slovak Ipeľ, the river overflows). Balassagyarmat is 17, Salgótarján 21, Vac 44, Budapest 74 kilometers (by air).

History

The first Hungarian mention of Szécsény took place in 1219 and as early as 1334 it received all the city privileges. At that time a city wall and a fort were built, which the Hussites occupied in 1433. Later until the end of the Rákóczi freedom struggle it was invariably occupied by various armies (for example the Turks). Due to the frequent destructions Szécsény lost the rank of city in 1886, but just after a hundred years it regained it. Since 2008 the border has been freely crossed to Slovakia due to an internal Schengen area, even a bridge was built across the river in 2012.

Szécsény is located in a temperate, continental climate, like full Hungary, but in that northern part the temperature is slightly lower.
