background

language

German is understood everywhere, including by the relatively significant Roma minority. The dialect of the German-speaking population ("Heanzen", presumably going back to Emperor Heinrich IV, who settled the German population here) is very pronounced, as the area belonged to Hungary until 1920 and Standard German was not taught. In addition, Hungarian, Croatian.

getting there

By car from Vienna and Graz via the A 2, (junction Pinkafeld or Lafnitztal). Direct trains from Vienna to Oberwart.

mobility

Since the area belonged to Hungary until 1920, the (poor) railway network is geared towards Hungary and is only suitable to a limited extent for visiting the region. The road network is well developed and all parts of the country are easily accessible by bus.

Tourist Attractions

Due to the demarcation to the east by the iron curtain, the region was neglected tourism for decades and only recently has efforts been made to establish tourist attractions. The gently rolling countryside is especially a worthwhile destination for guests looking for peace and quiet. At Bernstein (on the B 50) in the mountains of the Günser Mountains, serpentine is mined and processed.
