Phrasebook Armenian - Taalgids Armeens

Armenian (Հայերեն, Hayerēn) is the Indo-European language used in Armenia spoken by the vast majority of the population. The language is considered their mother tongue by about 10 million not only in Armenia but also in Nagorno-Karabakh and after the Armenian diaspora also in many other countries, such as France and the United States.

Grammar

Armenian has its own alphabet, developed by Sint-Mesrop Mashtots. It is an independent branch of the Indo-European language family and is the only surviving of three related languages from antiquity. The other two, Thracian and Phrygian, have disappeared under the pressure of Greek or Latin.

Variants of Armenian:

  • Ancient Armenian or Classic Armenian
  • New Armenian
  • Eastern Armenian/
  • western Armenian.

Alphabet

The Armenian alphabet was introduced in 405 AD. designed by the Armenian scholar and religious Mesrop Mashtots. Both languages spoken in Armenia (Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian) use the Armenian alphabet. The alphabet originally consisted of 36 letters. The order of the letters had a religious symbolism; the Armenian alphabet started with "Ա" A and ended with "Ք" Q, referring to God (Աստուած) and Christ (Քրիստոս). Later the letters "և" (j)ev, "օ" o and "ֆ" f were added.
