Taqah (Arabic:طاقة, DMG Ṭāqa) is a coastal city and an administrative district (Wilaya) in the governorate Dhofar in the southwest of the sultanate Oman.

economy

The main source of income for the villagers is fishing. There are rich fishing grounds for Indian sardines off the coast. The sun-dried fish serve as high-protein cattle feed. In addition, coconut palms are cultivated and vegetables are grown. In the nearby quarries, the "Taqah stone" (it consists of sandstone and shell limestone) is extracted, which is used as a cheap building material for the entire region.

history

From pre-Islamic times there are still the ruins of the old Taqah, which is about one kilometer west of today's settlement area.

The place Taqa is on the main road No. 49, between Salalah in the west and Mirbat in the East. The place is located directly on a white sandy beach and is lined with thousands of coconut palms and agricultural gardens.

  • This is in the center of the village Taqah Fort, that from a slightly higher altitude 1 Weir system and one below 2 residence of the former governor. The buildings are around 250 years old. The house was opened to the public in 1994 after a complete restoration, it serves as a local museum. There is also an incense bush in the courtyard. The weir system has been renovated and has been open to visitors again since December 2011.
  • About 2 km after the western entrance to the village there is a mosque, in its cemetery as well Mazun al-Mashani, the mother of Sultan Qaboos ibn Saidwho is buried. An uncle and a grandfather of the Sultan are also buried there under identical marble tombstones.
  • In the summer months, at times of Charif, a trip to the nearby waterfall des 3 Wadi Darbat, which plunges almost 100m over the mighty cliffs into the depths of the Khor Rori lagoon. The lagoon is one of the most beautiful bays in the region.
  • The archaeological excavation site is located about 10 km east of the entrance to the village at the mouth of the Wadi Darbat 4 Khor Rori (= the ancient Sumhuram), which can be visited. Khor Rori was founded in 2000 with the sites of the Incense trade in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site recorded. Sumhuram was between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. a center of the incense and copper trade. The river mouth of the Khor Rori is a protected area for migratory birds, and flamingos also spend the winter here.
  • 5 Travertine curtain, an approx. 150 m high embankment that was created by limestone deposits in Wadi Darbat.
  • About 10 km west of Taqa you can turn right from the main road 6 Ain Hamran turn. A spring in the middle of shady coconut palms invites you to rest, the area is often used by locals for picnics.
  • 7 Qasbar Fort, Ruins of a fortress, probably from Sumhuram's heyday.
