Geographical notes

Salalah rises in a flat area, facing the Indian ocean, surrounded by the Dhofar mountains. The region is one of the rare areas inhabited by Arabic-speaking populations to be affected by the monsoons: in the region the phenomenon is known as kharīf.

Background

Traditional capital of Dhofar Governorate, very prosperous and powerful in the thirteenth century, thanks to the flourishing trade of incense, later underwent a period of decline, which led it to be absorbed by the Muscat. From 1932 to 1970 it was the capital of the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman, under the leadership of Saʿīd ibn Taymūr. On the death of the Sultan, his successor, his son Qābūs, decided to move his residence to Muscat.
