Tasmania is named after Abel Tasman, the Dutch navigator who discovered it.
More than a third of its territory is part of reserves, natural parks or protected areas, and this characteristic has led the island to promote itself and present itself as an important tourist and naturalistic destination.
Geographical notes
Tasmania is bordered to the north by the Bass Strait, to the east by the Tasman Sea and to the south and west by the Indian Ocean. The highest mountains are Legges Tor 1,573m and Ossa 1,617m.The only islands in the state are: the King's Islands and the Furneaux Islands. The main rivers are: Arthus and Derwent. The main lakes are: Gordon, Great and Pedder.
