Tibissa or Tebessa - a city in the north-east Algeria, in the province (wilaya) of the same name, in a region inhabited by Chaoui Berbers. The city has about 222 thousand. inhabitants (2012). Phosphate rock is mined in the vicinity of Tebessa. There is a chemical and cement industry, including handicraft carpets. It is also an important transportation hub (airport). The monuments of Tebessa are Roman and Byzantine buildings (including the Arch of Caracalla, the Temple of Minerva, the ruins of the Christian basilica, the ruins of the amphitheater and the massive city walls from the Byzantine era.
