The industrial city Ternitz is a municipality on Steinfeld in the southern Lower Austria.
background
Ternitz is a relatively young city. After the opening of the southern runway in 1846, several industrial companies and settlements for the workers were built on the green meadow. These workers' settlements subsequently swallowed up the small towns of St. Johann am Steinfeld, Dunkelstein and Rohrbach am Steinfeld. The three parishes were united in 1923 to form the parish of Ternitz. The new name comes from a field name that was first mentioned in 1352 (Land for the Tehannts). In 1948 Ternitz received city rights. In 1969 and 1974 the neighboring communities of Flatz, Sieding, Pottschach and Raglitz were incorporated. The urban settlement area has also completely merged with the village of the neighboring municipality of Wimpassing in the Black Valley.
Ternitz is still characterized by large industrial companies, including a steel mill. Ternitz is also the main location of the movie Ternitz, Tennessee (Austria 2000; director: Mirjam Unger, actors: Nina Proll, Sonja Romei and Gerald Votava).
