Geographical notes

It borders the peripheral unit of Kozani to the northwest and that of Pieria to the northeast (both in Macedonia), the Aegean Sea to the east, the prefecture of Magnesia to the southeast, that of Phthiotis to the south, that of Karditsa to the southwest and that of Trikala West.

Larissa is the second largest peripheral unit in the country, surpassed only by the prefecture of Aetolia-Acarnania. There is the Tempe Valley and the northeastern part of the Pineios River. It is the largest peripheral unit of Thessaly, of which it occupies about a third of the surface. It also includes the highest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus (2,917m).

The southern, northern and north-western areas are covered with forests, while the central, south-western, western and south-western parts are covered with fertile lands called the Plain of Thessaly. The barren parts are located to the east and north-east, near the sea and the area of ​​Mount Olympus.

Urban centers

  • 1 Aghiokambos - Small seaside resort considered the Larissa beach. It overlooks a particularly long stretch of coast on which other seaside resorts have sprung up.
  • 2 Larissa - Capital and largest city of the Thessaly, Larissa is one of the oldest cities in Greece but its present appearance is quite modern.
  • 3 Metaxochori (Μεταξοχώρι) - Pretty village with traditional stone streets and houses. It is located at the foot of Mount Kissavos between green landscapes and a myriad of streams which in the past favored the rise of numerous silk factories, hence the name. Metaxochori in fact means the village of silk. Today the traditional cultivation of fruit trees has been preserved. Metaxochori is in fact famous throughout Greece for the production of apples but also of cherries with an exquisite taste.
  • 4 Skiti (Σκήτη) - Traditional village with beautiful views of the coast below. It also serves as a base for excursions to Mount Kissavos (ancient Mount Ossa. Some of the old houses in Skiti have been converted into tourist lodgings (Xenones). The best "xenonas"of Skiti to 2020 was Eos. There are also agrotourism. About 1 kilometer northwest of Skiti, (on the new road leading from Larissa to Agiokampos) is the monastery of Mount Kelli, called Santi Anargiroi whose visit should not be missed. The monastery includes the cells of the anchorites carved into the rock and a fresco made between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries.

Other destinations

  • 1 Delta of the Peneus River (Δέλτα του Πηνειού ποταμού) - After crossing the Tempe Valley, the Peneus River flows into the Aegean Sea with a branched delta interspersed with marshes and ponds bordered by rich vegetation. More and more tourists are coming from the nearby beaches of the Pieria who ask the fishermen of the nearby village of Stomio to take them for a walk around the delta with their boats.
