Tjörn is an island off Sweden's west coast in the province Bohuslan and the province of Västra Götalands län.

It is a maximum of 18.8 km long and a maximum of 15.2 km wide and with its 167.3 km² it is the sixth largest island in Sweden. The island belongs to the municipality of the same name. The community consists of a total of 1,546 islands, two thirds of which are larger than 100 m². The entire coast is over 600 km.

In the street

From Stenungssund (connection to the E 6) you can reach the island of Tjörn via the 664 m long Tjörnbron. In the north, Tjörn is connected to the island of Orust via the Skåpesundsbron. Further north on the island of Orust, one reaches the mainland again near Uddevalla via the Vindöbron.

From Rönnäng, in the south of Tjörn, the ferry runs to the car-free islands of Dyrön, Tjörnekalv and Åstol. The car can be parked at the parking lot at the ice rink. From there it is about a 15-minute walk to the ferry terminal.
From Kyrkesund, in the west of the island, you can take the ferry to the also car-free island of Härön.

From mid-June to mid-August, day trips to Hamneskär are offered every weekend from Marstrand if the lake is in a good location.
  • Tjornbron. Tjörnbron creates a permanent connection with Stenungsund and the mainland. The current bridge was opened in November 1981. The pylons of the cable-stayed bridge are over 110 meters high. On the island side there is a rest area with toilets and seating.
  • 2  Sundsby Säteri (Sundsby Manor). old manor, circular hiking trails between 1.5 km and 4.5 km, restaurant and cafe, children's playground.
  • 3  Pilane Gravfalt and Sculpture Park, Pilane gravfalt, 471 92 Klövedal. Tel.: 46 304 663950. Pilane is one of the largest burial grounds in Bohuslän. Modern sculptures are exhibited here in the summer. The Pilane Farmyard Cafe is about 800 m from the exhibition grounds. Islands

  • Åstol. A rocky island with closely lined up white wooden houses and narrow, car-free asphalt paths. Åstol is originally a fishing village and was settled during the great herring seasons in the 18th century. Today around 200 people live on Åstol. Today you can find a café, a fisherman's library, a gallery and a grocery store on the island. Opposite the landing stage is the Åstols Rökeri . There is musical entertainment on some evenings in summer. In the middle of the island there is a salt water paddling pool, a natural rock pool with a slide and a sandy bottom.
  • Klädesholmen. An island and place in the municipality of Tjörn. The place, which is located on two islands (Koholmen and Klädesholmen), has been connected to Bleket on the island of Tjörn by a bridge since 1983. During the heyday of herring fishing, there were 25 canning factories on Klädesholmen. Today there are still 3 factories that produce around 40% of Swedish canned food (including pickled herring) under the Klädesholmen Seafood AB brand. On Klädesholmen there is a small museum (Sillebua) in an old fish factory, which shows the catch and processing of the herring. For more information phone 46 304-673004.

  • Dyröleden. Approx. 5 km long hiking trail around the island of Dyrön, always with a view of the neighboring islands and the sea. The path is well signposted (Markings on stones). Regular events

  • The sailing regatta Tjörn down always takes place in the third week of August. It leads 28 nautical miles around the island, with bottlenecks where spectacular accidents occur again and again and is a magnet for visitors. With over 1000 boats, it is one of the largest sailing regattas in the world.
  • Sillens Dag (Herring Day) - On the Swedish national holiday on June 6th, Klädesholmen celebrates Herring Day. A festival with herring dishes, local market and music. A highlight is the presentation and premiere of the herring of the year (Årets Sill).
