Togoville

Togoville (former Togo) is a city of the Maritime Region in Togo.

To know

The city is famous for its animist practices and voodoo. Devotees come from all over southern Togo to study and practice their religion. There are fetishes and wood carvings in front of many houses in each neighborhood

It was originally known as Togo and the country took its name from this city.

Togoville is above all a village rich in tradition and history. The village, which as mentioned has given its name to the country, originally means a city "beyond the cliff" in the Ewe language (and not a city "beyond the river", a common mistake). It is in fact located on the edge of a very shallow lagoon, which is called Lake Togo, which has had the effect of misleading many people as to the origin of the word Togo.

Background

In 1884 the Treaties of Togoville were signed in Togoville by Gustav Nachtigal, which delivered to Germany the territories around Lake Togo, from that moment called Togoland.

After 17 years of regency, the sixth king Mlapa of Togoville was elevated. He spent 18 years in education. Induced on July 7, 2018, his name is Fiogan Joel Kwassi Mensah Mlapa VI.

What to do

  • To swim. The Togo lake, part of the lagoon that extends from Lome to Aného, is one of the few in West Africa where you can swim safely, as it is free from crocodiles and bacteria from the schistosomiasis. The north shore is sparsely populated, the villages thrive on fishing and agriculture.
