Tra Vinh is located at the end of the island sandwiched between the Tien and Hau rivers. The terrain is mainly flat land with an altitude of about 1m above sea level. The center of the province is Tra Vinh city, located on Highway 53, Ho Chi Minh City nearly 200 km and away from Can Tho city 100 km. Tra Vinh city has decided to establish on the basis of Tra Vinh town from March 2010.

History

During the Nguyen Dynasty, Tra Vinh was the name of a district (formerly a government) belonging to Lac Hoa government, province Vinh Long was established in 1832. In 1876, the French divided the old Vinh Long province into 3 sub-regions (the county of Tham Bao): Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Ben tre.
