Trencin - a city in the west Slovakia on the river Vah. Capital city Trencin country. Trencin is famous for its medieval castle situated on a hill above the town.

Characteristic

Trencin is the main town in the western part of Slovakia called "Považie". It is situated on the longest Slovak river called "Vag". Due to its importance and beauty, Trencin is called the "pearl of Povazia". Trencin is a quiet city with a beautiful historic center and a few suburbs. The hockey team in Trencin is one of the best Slovak hockey clubs and its soccer team is also in the top league. Overall Trencin is one of the richest towns in Slovakia with low unemployment and a fairly high standard of living. Due to its location between the mountain ranges, it can be windy. Winters are quite long and summers are not the warmest compared to Slovak average temperatures. Due to new investors and a large number of new construction projects, Trenčín is transforming into a new regional tourist center in Slovakia.

By plane

By rail

You can take one of the frequent trains from Bratislava to Trencin as it is on the main national line. The drive from Bratislava to Trencin takes approximately one hour and forty minutes. The journey further east to Košice takes between 3.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on the type of train.

By car

Trencin is located in northwest Slovakia, 120 kilometers north of Bratislava, near the border with Czechs. Main highway from Bratislava to Kosicewhich is still under construction in some parts, has a direct exit to the center of Trencin. When taking the D1 highway from Bratislava, the journey should not take more than an hour. Traveling by car to Košice from Trencin takes about four hours, a Banska Bystrzycawhich is located in central Slovakia, two hours by car.

By bus

Due to Trenčín's location in relation to other nearby towns, many buses run through it. The journey from Bratislava to Trencin takes about two hours (train is the better option), to Banska Bystrica takes about three hours (bus is the fastest way) and if you want to travel to Košice take the train.

The main local bus station is just across the road from the train station. Tickets can be purchased on the bus.

The city center is very small and you can easily walk from one side to the other in minutes and most of them are pedestrianized.

By bus

Trencin has a fairly good public transport system, though not as common in smaller municipalities. Bus drivers sell tickets, but you can only use cash. The ticket is only valid for one journey without changing and costs € 0.60, and for luggage larger than 30x40x60 cm, € 0.25. You need to use the first door to get on board.

Roman inscription from 179 (Rímsky nápis) - There is one unique Roman inscription dating from 179 AD when Roman legions under the command of Marcus Aurelius wintered in the settlement, then named Laugaricio. It is written on the castle rock and is easily accessible from Hotel Elizabeth (formerly Hotel Tatra).
City gate (Mestská veža) - the rest of the city fortifications.
Synagogue (Synagóga) - built in 1913. It is available during the occasional exhibits; with a small worship room at the rear of the building.
Museum of wheels (Múzeum kolies) - exhibits of car wheels made of wood or stone.
Beckov Castle (Beckovský hrad) - is a local castle ruin. It can be easily reached by bike from Trencin, or by several direct buses from Trencin, or with one change via Nové Mesto nad Váhom.
Mineral water in Kubrá (Kubranská kyselka) - the spring of mineral water is located in Kubrá near the forest with a playground for children. Easily accessible on foot, by car or by bus (numbers 7, 11 and 13 from the Kubranská, Kyselka stop).
Island (Ostrov) - a popular recreation place right next to the city center. Also the site of the annual summer event Splanekor (Splav netradičných korábov - Sailing of extraordinary ships).

Hradza is a dyke along the Vah river. The path is used by walkers, cyclists and inline skaters.

Brezina

Brezina is a forest that runs in the south-eastern part of Trencin, only a two-minute walk from the city center. It includes many very nice, quiet and safe routes, also suitable for cycling.

Shopping centers

Max - General M.R. Štefánika 426, there are many cafés and small shops within 1 km from the train and bus station.
Baumax, Big Boxes and Tesco - Električná 911 01 Trenčín, are located on the other side of the city. There are some good shops as well as cheap ones. But my recommendation is to go to the square.
Južanka shopping center - located in the part of the city called "Juh".
Laugaricio - a new shopping mall on the outskirts of the city. There are many sports shops as well as clothing stores and many cafes and restaurants.

Gastronomy

There are many good places to eat in Trencin, there are some really good fast foods in the city center, and you can taste national specialties such as "Cigánska pečienka" which is a split pork roast in the form of a roll.

What to drink

Although Trencin is a small city, there are plenty of places to drink. The season kicks off Friday and Saturday, with many people going downtown to enjoy the entertainment.

Cinema Movies Club - very good place for entertainment on Friday and Saturday, during the week it is a restaurant. No disco entrance fee, drinks are cheaper than Steps and also society is middle class.

Tea rooms

One large teahouse is located in Mierové square opposite the Church, which is also a tea shop. There is one very good tea - Tea of Old Touaregs, green tea made from gunpowder.

Čajovňa Jaipur is an oriental themed tea house on the other side of the clock tower near the tourist information center on Hviezdoslavova 8. It has a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff, delicious tea, non-alcoholic cocktails and sheesha pipes. They often have live music and there is a terrace for pleasant evenings.

Festivals, parties

Pohoda Music Festival. This is a great event that everyone is waiting for. It takes place on the second weekend of July. It usually starts from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning. The main program is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. About 25,000 people take part in the event. Mainly camping in tents at the former military airport.
Art Film Fest. International film festival. Art Film Fest is a competitive International Film Festival. The festival was founded in 1993 and takes place every year at the end of June in the historic town of Trenčín and the nearby historic spa town of Trenčianske Teplice.

Security

Trencin is quite a quiet city, it is very safe by European and American standards; there aren't as many crimes as in other parts of the world, the police are very respected in the city and can be found very often in the city center. But only one recommendation, be careful with pickpockets or thieves. Take care of your wallet if you are on the bus, train and in a crowded place.

Tourist information

Slovaks are very popular for their hospitality to foreigners. They are also well known in the world for their adaptability and kindness, but if you have any problem try asking them nowadays, many Slovaks speak English or another foreign language and will be happy to help you if they don't try to call 112 (police first help and guard).
