Tsévié is a city of Maritime Region in Togo.

To know

The city is an important market center for trade and is known for its palm oil processing.

Background

The city was founded in the 18th century by members of the Adja-Ewe linguistic group who fled from the dictatorship of King Agokoli whose throne was established at the time in the current Notsé (Haho prefecture). Upon their arrival on the current territory of the city of Tsévié, they would grow beans. Part of the fleeing group feared that King Agokoli would send his men to take them. She would decide to continue on the path of exile and go south towards Lome; the other party would have chosen to stay on site to continue the bean culture, hence the name of Tsévié (ayia ne tse vie in Ewe language means "the beans grow a little"). The 17 cantons of Tsévié commemorate the bean festival known as Ayizan every year in August,
