City of kings and vegetables

Once Zaragoza fell, the Muslims who had taken refuge in Tudela had no choice but to accept the conditions of Alfonso I the Battler and surrender in 1119. They respected their lives and lands, but they were forced to leave the city and settle outside the walls. . On the hill of Santa Bárbara the Moorish citadel was raised first and on it the castle-palace of the Navarrese kings. From it the shore of Navarra and its excellent orchards were dominated. The Vegetable of Tudela and neighboring areas has deserved fame and reaches its highest gastronomic levels in the vegetable stew.

The Cathedral has three doors, all worthy of admiration. The one of the Last Judgment stands out, a masterpiece of the 13th century sculpture, where paradise is represented on the left and significant scenes of a ruthless hell on the right.

  • Baroque chapels

Walking through the interior of the sober Gothic temple, we are surprised by the baroque chapels of Santa Ana and Espiritu Santo, which have vaults with lanterns covered with marble and elaborate plasterwork with a multitude of angels, cherubs and floral decorations.

  • The Castle

On the hill of Santa Bárbara, currently presided over by the monument to the Sacred Heart, stood a powerful medieval castle that was the residence of the Navarrese kings. Today only the ruins of what was left and magnificent views of the city.
