Tupiza is a city with about 25,000 inhabitants in a gorge in the south Bolivia at an altitude of almost 3,000 meters, about 60 kilometers from the Argentine border. She is nicknamed La Bella de Bolivia (The beauty of Bolivia) because of the colorful rocky mountains in the area.

Tupiza is economically dependent on mining and tourism. The city was able to market itself successfully, especially in the USA, as two well-known outlaws and crooks from the early 20th century, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid let their illegal machinations prevail.

By train

The Expreso del Sur or. Wara Wara del Sur connects Tupiza with Uyuni, Villazón on the border with Argentina and Oruro. In this direction, the train is the best form of public transport.

By bus

Buses go to Villazón, Potosí, Oruro and La Paz. The bus station charges a low usage fee that has to be paid prior to departure. The duration of the trip depends on the road conditions.

In the street

A bad gravel road connects the city with Potosí (220 km on the Ruta14), Tarija (216 km via Rutas 14, 20 and 1) and Villazón (92 km via Ruta 14), to Uyuni (197 km via Ruta 21) is the road in even worse condition (Road map Bolivia). An all-terrain vehicle is not absolutely necessary, but a sturdy car with sufficient ground clearance is highly recommended.

There are good hiking opportunities in the area. The ascent to the Cerro La Cruzbut you should wear good shoes because the path is quite steep. In the hotels and hostels, young people offer themselves as guides for little money.

As is typical in Bolivia, the market is the city's shopping center. There is a closed market hall near the plaza, but also an open market that is a bit out of the way.

kitchen

There are numerous inexpensive places to eat well. In particular, the local specialties such as chicken with rice and paprika vegetables (picante de pollo) are sometimes extremely inexpensive.

Tupiza has a handful of nightclubs around the plaza.

The range of accommodation is good, especially in the lower price range. Many hotel employees speak some English because of the large number of Americans.
