Turin - Turín

Turin is a city of Italy.

Turin is a city in northwestern Italy. Capital of the homonymous province. It is located in the plain delimited by the Estura de Lanzo, Sangone and Po rivers.

The Dora Riparia passes through the north of the city. The river Po divides the part of the city located on the hill, and Torino from the plain that has an altitude between 280 and 220 and is inclined towards the east.

Turin is proud to be the beginning of Italy as a unified nation. Architects such as Arata Isozaki, Gae Aulent and Arnaldo de Bernardi have collaborated until a few months ago on the new image of Turin for the Winter Olympic Games that were held last year. It has been a deep face and body wash, after a decade almost daily in the media for the adventures of Fiat and Juventus. From the neater library to the Cathedral, everything was put at the service of an event that caught on and left considerable income.

Economically it has lost strength compared to the powerful Milan or Rome, and being so far north hurts it for tourism that Venice, Florence or the capital prefers. The industrial fever of the XX was lived with the Agnelli family employing thousands and thousands of people, until the crisis of that so famous Fiat and from here like the Savoy or the musings of Nostradamus, who also lived in Turin. The old bourgeois city is baroque and modernist: Palazzo Reale, Piazza Castello, Palazzo Madama, the Roman Quadrilatero,… Now the Mole Antonelliana is the symbol of the city, the photo of the guides. It is cool because it is gigantic, you can see it from everywhere. It owes its name to Antonelli, its builder in the 19th century, and its original service was that of a synagogue, but the Jews of Turin fell short of money.

Ancient Turin, Turin, the first capital of Italy, Turin, the great industrial center: each era has a different identity that has left its mark on the portrait of the city and that is expressed in a cultural, architectural and monumental heritage. And today? Today more than ever Turin looks ahead and becomes a meeting place for different cultures and a point of reference for the development of new technologies and new productive sectors.

Turin responds with a chorus of events and inescapable moments. From art to music, from theater to cinema and sports: Turin vibrates, at every moment of the year, between events that are already a classic and new proposals. A billboard full of shows, shows and events capable of moving in every way.

Famed for the Shroud and headquarters of FIAT, Turin, previously known only as an industrial city and capital of the automobile industry, has revitalized its European image, orienting it towards the new technological Europe, based on the modern culture of innovation.

The Egyptian Museum, the second best after Cairo, and the curious Museum of Cinema are worth mentioning in Turin.

But there are two things that you cannot miss: the Shroud and Leonardo da Vinci's self-portrait, yes, the one made with sanguine. La Sindone is a matter of faith, the only thing that seems obvious is that it remains a mystery whether or not it was the shroud with which they wrapped Christ, kept in the Cathedral since the 16th century. A replica can be seen, although it is expected that in 2025 the original will be exhibited again for a few months. And the self-portrait is the other great mystery; Of course, it is astonishing at the precise anatomical detail and that we keep in mind the face of the master, but those of us who like these stories love to think, like the famous theory, that the face of the Mona Lisa is that of Leonardo. it goes to the Porta Palazzo market, the Castello de Rivoli –one of the Savoy residences–, the Basilica di Superga and the Palazzo Madama, part medieval and part Baroque. Also in the Cathedral, Renaissance and built only in nine years, with a Juvarra bell tower and a reproduction of 'The Last Supper' above the main door.

Perhaps more than being Turinese, it is that Piedmontese are peculiar. Rooted, educated, a bit methodical and traditional. Something enigmatic, like the source of the Po, which crosses all of Piedmont. It was captured by Cesare Pavese and it even seems that Hemingway in ‘Farewell to arms’, although rather because of the lakes. By the way, in Turin Pavese committed suicide.

Piedmont ('pie de monte') is the second largest region in Italy, protected - and separated from France - by the Alps on one side and just to the north by the Aosta Valley. They have also called it ‘the most romantic Italy’, although it goes according to taste. It is a deep land, of vineyards, traditions and beliefs, palaces, lakes, mountains and Po, the river of crosswords.

Turin boasts the aperitif as a ritual, the vermouth, the local Martini, the midday break, which hardly anyone in the city forgives. More than the drink, the important thing is the stop, the meeting, better in a historic place or one of the modern ones in the Quadrilatero. And that Turinese chocolate… Sapori di un tempo, the difficult resistance to trying a cioccolato di Torino, with two specialties: gianduiotti (Piedmont hazelnuts covered in chocolate) and bicerin (coffee drink, chocolate and milk cream). Even last year, for the Winter Olympic Games, Turin Tourism launched the ‘Chocopass’, a card to taste at any point all the chocolate specialties during the Olympic period, with prices from 10 to 20 euros, depending on the consumer's sweet tooth.
