Tonsberg is a city on the southwestern bank of the Oslofjord.
background
Tønsberg is located a few kilometers inland at the western exit of the Oslofjord into the Skagerrak, but is directly connected to the Oslofjord by a few inlets and bays.
The city is still considered the oldest city in Norway, according to the (only) source of the old Icelandic poet Snorri Sturluson the city is said to have been founded in 871. However, no evidence has been found for these early roots in several excavations. However, what was found near the city comes from Oseberg shippreserved from a ship burial in the Viking Age, roughly from the time the region was settled by Vikings. The Oseberg ship can be seen today in the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskiphuset) in Oslo visit.
