Åsgårdstrand is a place on the western bank of the Oslofjord in Norway.

background

Munchs The girls on the bridge originated in Åsgardstrand

Åsgårdstrand is a small seaside resort on the western bank of the Oslofjord a few kilometers south of Horten. For a long time the place was considered an artists' colony and was praised then as now for its special light (which supposedly only in the same form in Hirtshals should be given in Denmark). Edvard Munch, the most famous Norwegian painter, owned a small fisherman's house here. Many of his well-known paintings (such as The girls on the bridge, 1901) were created here.
