Udupi is a city in Udupi district of south indian State Karnataka. She is especially famous for her cuisine, whereby "Udupi" is often used in restaurants as a term for the South Indian cuisine itself. In addition, there are large, famous temples, beautiful beaches and a relaxed city atmosphere.
background
getting there
By plane
The next major airport is in Mangalore, about 56 kilometers away.
By train
By bus
Udupi is easily accessible by bus due to its proximity to Mangalore. Bus routes from Bangalore, for example, usually stop in Mangalore first before they stop in Udupi. The roads over the Westgahts are in poor condition, the drive is sometimes extremely bumpy. Booking a sleeper here saves a lot of suffering.

Tourist Attractions
The main attractions are the city's temple district, the beaches such as Kapu or Malpe Beach with St Mary's Island, the delicious food and also the elevated Manipal University. In the area, for example at the Manipal Endpoint, you can enjoy beautiful gardens with a view, as well as take a boat tour on the nearby river.
- St Mary's Island. Take a bus from the regional train station to Malpe Beach, and take a boat to the island from the beach. Tropical island with palm trees and bizarre stone formations. Avoid midday heat if possible, good views from the rocks.
activities
shop
Since Udupi is of a certain size, a lot can be found here. All ordinary shops should be available, many bakeries / candy shops and a jewelery alley are noticeable.
kitchen
Udupi's cuisine is known throughout India and beyond and is certainly one of the absolute highlights. Traditionally prepared dishes can be enjoyed in the temple precinct:
- Goli Biahje
- Idly & Vada with coconut chutney and samba
- Masalla Dosa
nightlife
As a temple city, Udupi is not known for any nightlife. You will still find a beer, but this is the wrong place to party extensively. In Manipal there are other options, such as a shisha bar, due to the affiliated university.
