The river that gives this valley its name is not called the same everywhere. It arises as Vilcanota near the Andean pass Abra la Raya (4338m above sea level). He's the one between Písac and Ollantaytambo Wilcamayu, the holy river. As Urubamba it still flows over 700 km before it comes to terms with the Apurimac united to the Ucayali.

Here the valley between Sicuani and Quillabamba is described in the direction of the river from southeast to northwest:

  • Sicuani, the capital of the Canchis province in the Cuzco region, is 3550 m above sea level and about 120 km from Cuzco.
  • Raqchi with the temple complexes of Wiracocha

background

Market in Písac

The section between Písac and Ollantayambo is called the Sacred Valley of the Inca because it has very good soils, a good climate, dense forests, mineral salts and thermal springs. This valley can be reached from Cusco in several ways:

  • in the street past Sacsayhuaman via Kenko, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay to Písac or else
  • from Cusco via Chinchero to Urubamba. In the vicinity of Chinchero a road branches off to Maras with its salt terraces and to Moray with the circular terraces, probably experimental fields of the Inca.
  • There is another possibility by train: From Cuzco, a railway line zigzags up to Poroy, the station is 3486 m above sea level, then down again via Izcuchaca to Ollantaytambo and ends shortly behind Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Incidentally, this is the only way to get to Aguas Calientes, because the road turns before and leads around the massif of the mountain range Cordillera Veronica around via Umasbamba and Ipal back into the Urubamba valley to Quillabamba. However, there is also a trail from Ollantaytambo via Wayllabamba, Sayacmarca and Winay Wuayna to Machu Picchu.
