The name Urunga is derived from an Aboriginal word which long white beaches means. The place is at the confluence of the rivers Kalang and Bellinger and at their confluence with the sea. This creates a large shallow and brackish water zone that is under water depending on the ebb and flow of the tide. Since some protective measures towards the open sea were implemented in the 1940s, extensive mangrove shrub areas have emerged.
