background

places

The village community Ushguli consists of the four villages or hamlets that are close together:

  • Schibiani (ჟიბიანი, Zhibiani)
  • Chwibiani or Tschubiani (ჩვიბიანი, Chvibiani / Chubiani)
  • Chashashi (ჩაჟაში, Chazhashi / Chajashi)
  • Murqmeli(მურყმელი).

getting there

The journey to Ushguli is via alpine gravel roads. Due to the lack of guard rails, it is advisable to drive carefully. Ushguli is only over until July / August Zugdidi and Mestia to reach. From July / August there is also an arrival via Ratchet (Ambrolauri-Tsageri-Lentekhi) and the approximately 2600 meter high Zageri Pass to Ushguli is possible. Driving over this route is only possible with a 4WD vehicle, as the condition of the slopes is miserable.

The road signs (especially signposts) are mostly missing, which is why it is recommended to get good maps (in Tbilisi or possibly Mestia available) and ask for directions.

The distance Zugdidi-Mestia is now very well developed and paved, the further expansion to Ushguli is currently (2013) in progress.

mobility

The area around Ushguli is best explored on foot (don't forget your mountain boots and weather protection!). Partly gravel roads lead into the side valleys, which can only be used with an off-road vehicle.
