Vũng Tau is a city in the Vietnamese province Bà Rịa-Vũng Tau. The city is located in the south-east of the country on a peninsula, it is the commercial center of the region and a popular destination for weekend excursions from 130 km away Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

Portuguese sailors anchored their ships in the bay of "Vũng Tau" as early as the 16th century. Settlement by the Vietnamese did not take place until the 19th century, after they had succeeded in driving away Malay pirates. The place was first known under the name "Tam Thắng". The peninsula was named under the colonial rule of the French Cap Saint Jacques, the place developed into a seaside resort. The discovery of oil and natural gas deposits on the coast made the city an important location for the petrochemical industry. Other important branches of industry are fishing and, in particular, tourism.

White Palace (Bach dinh)
  • 1 Thich Ca Phat Dai, one of the largest pagodas in Vung Tau. It is located on the north side of Nui Lon (Big Mountain). The entire complex is about 5 hectares. A white Buddha figure over 10 m high, sitting on a lotus flower, is visible from afar. Earth is kept in four urns, it comes from holy places: from the place of Buddha's birth, from the place of his enlightenment, his first sermon and from the place of his transition into nirvana. Other sanctuaries are a white octagonal tower, a temple complex and several statues. From the pagoda you have a nice view of the northern part of the city.
  • 2 Dinh Thang Tam temple, the temple within the city was built to honor the founders of Vung Tau. On his right side is that Lang Ong Nam Hai , the "whale temple". According to tradition, a large dead whale was once washed up on the shore, which the fishermen could only salvage with great effort. The bones are housed in a mausoleum.
  • Rivet Ban tinh Xa or Chua Phat Nam, Pagoda of the Reclining Buddha, on Mount Nui Nho. The pagoda was built around 1970.
  • 3 Christ statue on Nui Nho (Small Mountain), built around 1970, about 30 m high, inside 129 steps lead to the head of the figure.
