Valbona is a village in Northern Albania
background
landscape
The valley of the Valbona is surrounded by mountains with heights of up to 2400 meters.
Flora and fauna
climate
The temperatures in Valbona are significantly lower than on the coast, warm clothing is highly recommended. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night as early as early October.
getting there
The journey takes place via the place Bajram Curr, from there a gravel road (status autumn 2013) goes to Valbona. However, this is not recommended with a small car, the exact condition of the road depends on rainfall and landslides, there are large potholes and deep gullies on the roadway. From Bajram Curr there are minibuses to Valbona. A recommended journey from the coast is with the passenger ferry from Koman on the Komansee to Fireze and from there via Bajram Curr to Valbona.
The road in Valbona itself is freshly paved and in very good condition.
mobility
In Valbona itself there are no regular buses or other public transport. Sometimes you walk relatively long through the (very beautiful) valley to get to the beginning of a hiking route. If in doubt, it is worth asking at the property.
Tourist Attractions
activities
Especially hiking.
shop
In Valbona there are no shops and no ATMs or banks, you should get everything you need in Bajram Curri at the latest. However, you can usually get a snack for hiking at the accommodations.
kitchen
accommodation
There are various types of accommodation along the road, from relatively simple to relatively comfortable.
camping
Some of the accommodations also offer possibilities for camping, in case of doubt you can always ask.
security
Crime doesn't really matter, the nearest police station is an hour's drive away in Bajram Curr. There are poisonous snakes that can mainly be found on the stone walls and (like almost all gib snakes) are not aggressive and only bite when they are harassed. There are also bears and wolves.
trips
Crossing to Theth
From the end of the Valbona valley you can follow the Valpona pass Theth cross. You can get to the beginning of the path by following the road to the end of the valley and from there straight on. The path leads past the telegraph masts, which you can see after a while. From there it is very well marked by red-white-red path markings. The hike is moderately difficult, just before the top of the pass a few small landslides have to be crossed. In late summer and autumn you have to expect icing there. Right next to the top of the pass is a small peak that offers a good view of the Valbona and Thethi valleys.
During the ascent you can have a coffee in the Cafe Simoni right next to the Valbona spring. Even the water from the Valbona spring is safe to drink and can be used to replenish the water supply.
