Varese is a city of Lombardy north ofItaly.
Understand
Varese is a pleasant town located a few kilometers from the Swiss border, with a strong tourist vocation already developed at the beginning of the XXe century thanks to the achievement of rapid connections with Milan.
The city offers a historic center, a breathtaking view of the homonymous lake and the Alps and many possibilities for indoor and outdoor activities. Not far from Milan, Como, Lake Maggiore and the main southern Swiss cities such as Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona, Varese is an ideal base for visiting other centers and sites in northern Italy and Switzerland.
To go
By plane
The nearest airport is Milano-Malpensa which can be reached by 20 min by car. It is easily reachable by the Malpensa Express.
By car
The highway of the lakes comes directly from Milan. Coming from Switzerland, exit at Mendrisio and drive to Varese through the customs of Stabio-Gaggiolo.
By train
The "Servizio Ferroviario Regionale" connects Varese by train to other major cities of Lombardy (R lines). Services are provided by Trenitalia and by the rail network of Ferrovie North.
Circulate
Varese is small enough to get around on foot, and most of the streets are reserved for pedestrians. Nevertheless, if you want to reach and visit the towns and villages spread across the region, such as the Sacro Monte and S. Ambrogio Olona, we recommend that you use the public transport network, which includes several lines. Some are mainly within city limits (Urbani) and some are Extraurbani (outside city limits). It is best to buy a ticket at kiosks and bars before boarding, otherwise you can buy it on board at the same price of 1,4 € for 90 min. Taxis can be met on main roads or book at telephone number 39 0332 241-800.
