Vassallaggi is an archaeological site in the municipality of San Cataldo in the province of Caltanissetta in Sicily.
To know
The site, known as early as the nineteenth century, only starting from 1905 was the subject of excavations, which until the sixties gave brilliant results with the discovery of considerable traces of human presence starting from the Bronze Age up to the early centuries of Christianity.

Background
The oldest inhabitants of Vassallaggi were presumably the Sicans of the very early Bronze Age, a presence testified by red pottery painted with geometric motifs from the second millennium BC. Kiln tombs typical of those populations have been found nearby.
Throughout the late Bronze Age these hills were almost completely abandoned, only to be inhabited again during the Iron Age until the Hellenic colonization starting from the 5th century BC, a period that saw the village fortify and develop in the orbit of the ancient Akragas (Agrigento). The most important finds in the rich necropolis are attributed to this period, both in terms of quantity and state of conservation: ceramic sarcophagi, one of which in perfect condition, locally made vases, sets of vases from other Hellenic areas; knives, spears, bronze curries, coins. The construction of a temple for the worship of female divinities dates back to this period.
From the Roman age, there are traces of small inhabited areas scattered downstream, in the surrounding areas, especially along the road junctions in the direction of Agrigento. In the site of Vassallaggi, remains of Christian tombs were also found, dating back to the 5th century AD, obtained in the surrounding prehistoric caves.
