Understand
Vayots Dzor is a natural blend of small lakes, narrow gorges, lush vineyards, steep tracks, bucolic pastures and rivers. Thanks to the presence of the Arpa and Yeghegia rivers which cross the region, Vayots Dzor is an ideal place for trout fishing. It is also the ideal region for nature getaways, visits to historic sites and hunting. For the more adventurous, a helicopter tour allows you to experience a multitude of unforgettable emotions and keep fantastic memories of the region. The first settlement of Vayots Dzor was located in Moz, near the present-day village of Malishka. Several remains, including forts and cemeteries dating from the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age, have been found in the area.At the time of Marco Polo, Armenia was crossed by the Silk Road which linked China to Europe and as such, was one of the main axes used by merchants, traders, and explorers. Tired travelers then hurried to one of the many inns, or caravanserais posted along the route. The Selim Caravanserai, built in 1332 and located in the Sulema Mountains on the Gegharkunik border, is today one of the best preserved. The administrative center of Vayots Dzor is none other than the pretty little town of Yeghegnadzor, located on the banks of the Arpa river. Yeghegnadzor proudly displays its monuments dating from the 1st millennium BC. J.C. Visitors can visit the Yeghegnadzor Regional Museum, the City Art Gallery, and the History Museum of the University of Gladzor, which recently celebrated its 700th anniversary. One of the most astonishing architectural achievements is the Paskevich Bridge. Jermuk, the third largest city in the region, is one of Armenia's most famous spa resorts. Enjoying many days of sunshine and a favorable location in the heights, Jermuk owes its fame to its 40 springs of fresh, mineral water. The spa town of Jermuk helps to treat various ailments and illnesses but is also a place of recreation and relaxation for all those who linger there. In the city center, an establishment allows visitors to taste mineral water which, coming out of its source, reaches temperatures ranging from 57 to 64 degrees C. Winemaking, which is one of the industries in place and in the making in Armenia, testifies to a "return to the roots" for the Armenian nation. The country's wine was once famous and today Armenian winegrowers are determined to reclaim their old reputation. The village of Areni, the flagship of this booming industry, is worth a visit to taste its tasty and surprisingly fine grapes and the wine produced there.
