Velenje (dt. Wöllan) is a city in the district Savinjska in the Northeast Slovenia, around 60 km northeast of the state capital Ljubljana located.

The fifth largest city in Slovenia offers a lot of history and is characterized by mining and the Gorenje company.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

  • Velenje Castle. Pentagonal floor plan with closed castle courtyard, built in the 13th century, redesigned into a Renaissance palace in the 16th century, is now considered the best-preserved complex among the castles in the Salek Valley.

Velenje has a wide range of sports and leisure activities. The tourist and recreation center "Am See" represents the core of the leisure infrastructure. It is located on the shore of the mining-related Lake Velenje and is a successful example of the recultivation and revitalization of former mining areas in an international comparison.
