Velha Goa is an archaeological site in Goa, it was the former capital of the Portuguese colony.
background
The city was founded in the 15th century and was an important city even before the arrival of the first Europeans. The Portuguese did Velha Goa or Old Goa in the 16th century the capital of their Indian possessions. The city had over 200,000 inhabitants at that time and was considered to be due to its magnificent buildings Rome of the Orient. As a result of several epidemics of malaria and cholera, a large part of the population left the city and settled in Nova Goa down that as Panaji 1843 became the capital. Several buildings that were built in 1986 for the UNESCO world cultural heritage were declared.
Velha Goa should not be confused with the village about 15 km to the south 1 Velha Goa.

- 1 Basílica do Bom Jesus. The basilica was built from 1594 to 1604. In the church are the relics of the Jesuit Franz Xaverwho also came to China and Japan on his missionary trips.
- 2 Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina. The cathedral is the bishopric of the Catholic diocese Goa and Daman. Construction began in 1562 and was completed in 1619. Originally the church had two towers, one collapsed in 1776 and was never rebuilt.
