Understand
The town of Vercelli is located in the valley of the river Pado, at an altitude of 130 meters above sea level, and on the banks of the river Sesia. The whole area of the city is flat and rich in streams and canals, including the Cavour canal, which allow abundant irrigation of the area, which is fundamental for the rice cultivation. The city is located halfway between the cities Milan and Turin. The city is located on an area with almost zero seismic risk; the surrounding plain is almost entirely cultivated with rice fields.
History
The Ligurians were the first indigenous population during the Bronze Age (21st century BC) but were later joined by the Celts (5th century BC) who called it the Wehr-Celt.
An important crossroads, in Roman times it became "Vercellae". Since the fourth century the Diocese of Vercelli was established and became a center for the spread of Christianity throughout the region at the urging of Eusebius of Vercelli. A free city in the Middle Ages, this was a period of great artistic and cultural development for the city, when Vercelli was larger than Turin, so much so that the Studium was built there in 1228, the first subalpine university.
In modern times the cultivation of rice began in its territory: the cultivation of rice still represents the basis of the local economy today, so that it is the Italian and European "capital of rice".
At the end of the twentieth century, with the crisis of the industry, the tertiary sector became the main economic sector, strong development also had the logistics. Tourism is also slowly but steadily growing, both as a stop on the "Via Francigena"both as historical-artistic tourism.
Vercelli is home to the University of Eastern Piedmont "Amedeo Avogadro", a three-city structure shared with Alexandria and Novara.
Climate
The climate is semi-continental, typical of the footpath valley, with cold and often foggy winters and hot and very suffocating summers. The rains fall mainly on spring and autumn for an annual average of 824.3 mm. The wettest month is May, followed by November. Every year in the period between November and March falls an average of 25 cm snow. In the period from April to September, thunderstorms are common. Vercelli has a high humidity even in the summer season due to the evaporation of water from the rice paddies and is a poorly ventilated town.
