Vik is a small town almost at the end of the Sognefjordes, the longest fjord in the world.

Today Vik has approx. 3000 inhabitants. The municipality consists of 5 localities: Arnafjord, Vik (center), Vangsnes, Feios and Fresvik. Today all places have public facilities such as school, kindergarten, library and community center. There is at least one grocery store in all places. One lives mainly from agriculture, industry and tourism. In Vik, energy production through hydropower plays a major role.

By boat

Across the Sognefjord with the ferry connection Dragsvik - Hella - Vangsnes or with the speedboat from Bergen, which runs twice a day in summer.

By bicycle

Two of Norway's national cycle routes run through Vik on the same route. For both routes there are GPS tracks and route descriptions in the bike travel wiki: Nasjonal Sykkelrute 3 (Kristiansand - Ålesund) and Nasjonal Sykkel rod 3 (Røros - Leirvik).

There is a regular bus service between Vik and Vangsnes (10 km). However, it only runs every 2 hours and the timetable is very imprecise (if available at all !!)

Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Vikoyri. Vik still has a very old town center, "Vikoyri", which is well worth seeing. Here the old little wooden houses are lined up close together in an astonishingly good condition.
  • 2  Hopperstad stave church.   • 3  Hove Stone Church (Hove Church). It is one of the oldest stone buildings in the region. The church is open to visitors from mid-June to mid-August. There are also guided tours!
  • 5  Vangsnes. Vangsnes is one of the five districts of Vik. From there the ferries go to Hella and via Dragsvik to Balestrand or through the Fjärlandfjord to Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European mainland. The imposing bronze figure is in Vangsnes 4 Fridtjov the Brave. It was given to the Norwegians by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1912.

There is a hiking map for the municipality of Vik, which shows marked hiking and educational trails. As is common in Norway, the hiking trails are marked with a red T. In any case, it is advisable to only start with a card, otherwise you may experience surprises. The carved directional signs along the way are sometimes misleading ....

Trout can be caught in all rivers and lakes. With a little luck you can catch salmon in rivers. Fishing in the fjord is allowed without a permit, a fishing license is required for lakes and rivers.

  • Ski facility

Not far from the center there is a ski facility with a lift, ski jumping facility, shooting range, snowboard area and illuminated cross-country ski run! The facility is available to locals as well as tourists and competitors.

In Vik there is a well-stocked supermarket and a small shopping center with a bank, pharmacy, hairdresser, bookstore and souvenirs.

In agriculture, milk production, lamb production and the cultivation of raspberries are of particular importance. Vik has its own dairy in which the "Gamalost" cheese, which is typical for the region, is produced. In the cheese dairy in the center of Vik you can have a taste test (not everyone's cup of tea!)

  • Hopstock - hotell & motell. The Hopstock is probably the only larger hotel in the center of Vik. It also houses the tourist information.
  • 1  Sognefjord Gjestehotell. This house is located in Vangsnes and offers bed and breakfast accommodation. There is a small supermarket on the ground floor.

There are several campsites in the municipality of Vik. Three of them are located directly on the Sognefjord on the route between Vangsnes and Vik.

  • Solvang Camping. Right at the ferry terminal in Vangsnes. Rental of cottages, heated swimming pool.
  • Tveit Camping. Tent site, cabins, RV sites, boat rentals, beach.
  • Djuvik Camping. Campsite, RV sites, cabins, boat rentals, beach. Starting point for hikes.
