Map of Myrdal

background

Myrdal is little more than a train station on the north-western edge of the Hardangervidda, as access to the hiking and skiing areas of the Hardangervidda, as the end point of the famous Flåm Railway and as a transfer station for the Bergen Railway, but at the same time an important tourist destination in Norway.

As a hiker arriving at the train station from the lonely Hardangervidda, you shouldn't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself in a large crowd of tourists with large cameras and sometimes clothing that is unsuitable for the altitude. Minutes later, after the departure of a Flåm Railway, the train station may lie there in silence again.

Nevertheless, there are some accommodations available, and the Vatnahalsen Hotel, which is only a few 100 m away, but several meters lower, is not only a highly frequented area for a longer stay in winter.

getting there

Travelers can only reach Myrdal by train or on their own on foot or by bike, and in winter also on skis. For national travel, please read the article Flam, Voss and Hardangervidda note.

By train

  • Station at the Bergen Railway between Oslo and Bergen. Connections in both directions exist up to five times a day, including one night train.
    • Travel time Myrdal - Oslo approx. 4:50 hours. It is only 25 minutes to Finse train station in the middle of the Hardangervidda.
    • Travel time Myrdal - Bergen approx. 2:15. If you have to use the train in this direction to bridge the Gravhal tunnel, which is inevitable in this direction, you only need to sit in the train for 5 minutes.
  • End point of Flåm Railway from Flåm on Aurlandsfjord coming. The journey time down on the spectacular route is around 50 - 60 minutes.

By bicycle

Radler on the Rallarvegen, Part of the National Cycle Route 4, reach Myrdal from Finse above Hallingskeid coming as the end point of the bike path over the plateau. For cyclists with a goal Flam or Sognefjord, it goes steeply down the Flåmsdal for about 20 km. Cyclists with a goal Voss have to get on the Bergen Railway to Upsete for one station, as the Gravhal tunnel to the west of Myrdal cannot be bypassed.

On foot

Hikers can also use the Rallarvegen and other routes DNT over the Hardangervidda to Myrdal.
