Villeneuve-lès-Avignon is a municipality in the south Of France in the department Gard (No. 30).

background

Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (also: Villeneuve-lez-Avignon) is a congregation that is opposite Avignon lies on the western Rhône side.

The village of Saint-André on the hill Mont Andaon with the abbey Saint-André from the 10th century was the nucleus of the community.

The background was the decision of King Philip the Fair (Philip IV (1268-1314)) to build a fortress on the village Pont Saint-Benezet (Pont d'Avignon) to give a special position. The fortress was supposed to control the transition from the Roman-Germanic Empire to the French Kingdom. Between 1293 and 1307 there was a citadel, of which only a watchtower, Tour Philippe le Bel, is left over. At that time, the bridge spanned both arms of the Rhône from the Palais des Papes to the Tour Philippe le Bel. To supply the fortress, the king founded the "New City of Saint-André" in March 1293, which later became today's Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

Several popes, cardinals and prelates of the papal court settled here during the papal period of Avignon (1309-1430) and built some cardinal palaces for themselves and their court (Livrées) as well as monasteries and churches. In 1333 Cardinal Arnaud de Via consecrated the collegiate church (parish church) Notre Dame one that contains a copy of the famous Pietà. Already 23 years later, in 1356, the later Pope Innocent VI, now Cardinal Etienne Aubert, founded the Carthusian monastery Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction.
