Estonia (Estonian language) is a Baltic Finnish language that is closely related to the Finnish language. There are more than 1.1 million speakers of the Estonian language.

Understand

Say it

Pronouncing Estonia is easy for Finns, with the exceptions mentioned below. Alphabet:

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p r s š z ž t u v õ ä ö ü

In addition to these c, q, w, x, y sometimes appear in loanwords.

  • Ä ä pronounced in the same way as in Finnish.
  • Ö ö pronounced in the same way as in Finnish.
  • Ü ü is Estonian y.
  • Õ õ pronounced so that the tongue is like u, but the lips are like when pronouncing e [ɤ]. The message usually gets through even if it sounds like a mere Ö.
  • Š š sounds incl .
  • Ž ž sounds zh.

Some tips:

  • There is no in Estonia vocal harmony, so the front and back vowels may appear in the same word (e.g. thank you "thank you").
  • Consonants n, t, s and l can dissolve, i.e. pronounced "with j" as in Russia, most often (but not always) in front of i or j. However, this is not marked when writing, so salary may be pronounced "pa [lj] k" (log) or "pay" (pay).
  • Long vowels are marked by doubling as in Finnish, but they can be both half-length (shorter than Finnish) that too long (longer than Finnish). In ordinary writing, overly vowels are not marked, but in dictionaries, etc., sometimes with an `accent.
