Volgograd - Volgogrado

Volgograd (Russian: Волгоград) is a city russian located at the confluence of the rivers Volga Y Tsaritsa, in the homonymous oblast. It is a large city along the western bank of the Volga River in southern Russia. It used to be known as Stalingrad, a name the city is still known by on various war-related dates each year (due to local law). It was the scene of one of the most important and bloody battles of the Second World War.

Understand

Its fame and worldwide recognition are due to the fact that it was the site of the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the bloodiest battles of World War II, where Soviet soldiers resisted the conquest attempts by German forces between June 1942 and February. of 1943, meaning a very high cost of human lives. And in honor of this battle the Statue of the Motherland was made, a monumental 85 meter high statue and one of the most famous symbols of the city.

Volgograd is near the Volga estuary in the Caspian Sea. The city is more than 60 km long, on the right bank. It used to be divided by ravines that led to the Volga. Most of these have been filled, but some roads have substantial drops.

The southern part of the city includes the start of the Caspian Depression, and so is a great plain, interrupted only by the Ergeni mountain range. The construction of railways between Ergeni and Volga led to the creation of marshlands in the area. Consequently, parts of the southern regions are full of reeds.

History

The changing names of Volgograd reflect the changing historical eras. The strong Tsaritsyn It was founded on the site in 1589 by crossing the Volga on many trade routes. Between 1925 and 1961, the city was called Stalingrad. After the siege, it became a Hero City.

Volgograd's terrain is littered with the remains of fallen soldiers, while its air is filled with factory smoke and exhaust gases.

Weather

Travelers who visited Tsaritsyn also noted the unsatisfactory state of the city's amenities. In summer, the city is incredibly hot; In times of rain, off-center streets and yards can be very dirty from cars parked on the ground. Once the mud dries, it turns to dust, and with enough wind, city dwellers suffer from small dust storms. In Soviet times, when restoring the city, all these problems were taken into account: the design of the city provided for the "ventilation" of the streets with a fresh breeze from the Volga, the massive greening prevented the spread of dust. Little by little, the system is declining, the "Green Belt" around Volgograd is being destroyed, green spaces are shrinking for construction. Logging has increased lately, especially in preparation for the championship and beyond. Therefore, after the snow melts and before the green leaves appear (first half of April), the city is very dusty. It can be very hot in late May. The pleasant weather begins from late August to mid-October, when the likelihood of extreme temperatures is minimal. From November to March, Volgograd rarely has pleasant walking weather. But here too everything depends on the specific conditions that prevail.

Orientation

  • Traktorozavodsky and Krasnooktyabrsky districts. The northernmost industrial areas of the city. On its territory there are factories: "Volgograd Tractor Plant" (the shops of which continued to operate during the Battle of Stalingrad, despite the fact that the hordes of Germans were very close), "Red October" and "Barricades"
  • Dzerzhinsky district: here is the Gumrak airport
  • Tsentralny district - the historic city center
  • The Voroshilovsky district is the historic center of the city. The children's railway is located here.
  • Soviet, Kirovsky and Krasnoarmeisky districts. The beginning and the first locks of the Volga-Don Canal are located at Krasnoarmeysky.

The city received its modern design after the war and therefore there are no small winding streets in the old city. If you wish, of course, you can find reserved corners of the past, but to be able to navigate a bit around the city, it is enough to remember the following principles:

  • There are four longitudinals in the city:
    • "Zero": it goes practically along the Volga from the Zarina to the north just beyond the new stadium;
    • The first longitudinal - from the Volzhskaya hydroelectric power station in the north; through the center, where that same avenue is called Lenin and is, in fact, the central street of the city; through the proverbial tunnel to Tulaka, which took 20 years to build; formerly adjacent to the Second Longitudinal in the area of the state university.
    • The second longitudinal - from the abutment to the First longitudinal in the area of the tractor floor and to the south. Thus, the second longitudinal one passes through all the spaces of the city.
    • The third longitudinal - in the north it becomes the highway to Saratov, bypassing the city from the west, connecting with the highway to Rostov-on-Don. An extension to the southern part of the city is planned.

People

There is an absence of traditions throughout the city of Volgograd, due to which a large part of its population left the city during the war to be replaced by citizens from various regions. However, this means that the Russian spoken in Volgograd is very close to the standard Moscow dialect.

However, Tsaritsyn's proximity to Cossack lands has resulted in some cultural influence. Some time ago a monument to the Cossacks was installed in a mixed reception; Cossack influence is not as pronounced as elsewhere, such as Krasnodar Krai.

Finally, one more cultural peculiarity of the city is the number of migrants from the Caucasus.

Many young people are considering moving to Moscow, due to perceived lack of economic prospects in the region.

Many travelers to Volgograd note the unsuitability of the city's housing for its climate. Summer in the city is incredibly hot, and in the rainy season the streets fill with dirt from parked cars. After it dries, it turns into dust which can turn into a dust storm with enough wind. During the Soviet era and its associated development period, these concerns were raised, and officials planned systematic "ventilation" of the streets by Volga breezes, as well as massive environmental development to stop the spread of dust. Little by little, this system is falling into decline, the "green ring" around Volgograd is being ruined, and forests are being cut down to build houses. Therefore, between the snowfall and the appearance of leaves (in the first half of April), the city is very dusty. From the end of May it can also be very hot. The pleasant weather ceases in late August, but extreme temperatures are less assured from mid-October. From November to March, pleasant weather for walking becomes completely rare in Volgograd.

Walk into

By plane

  • 1 Volgograd International Airport (VOGIATA Международный Аэропорт Волгоград). Despite its name, it mostly has national routes, with Moscow and Saint Petersburg being the two main destinations. International connections are available to Munich and Yerevan and are operated by RusLine. Edit

By train

Volgograd is a major railway hub with good connections from Moscow (20 hours), Saint Petersburg (34 hours) and most of the other large cities in western Russia. Tickets cost between 3000 and 5000 руб for a second-class sleeper. In the other direction, trains come from Irkutsk (92 h) in Siberia. International connections are limited, but several Central Asian cities such as Bishkek (77 hours), Baku (30 hours) Dushanbe (72 hours), Tashkent (60 hours), as well as the two main cities of Kazakhstan, Almaty (68 hours) and Astana. (52 hr) have departures at least once a week. Direct routes from European countries are scarce, the usual route involves a change of trains in Moscow, however, there are some trains from Brest (45 hours) via Minsk (40 hours), Kiev (29 hours) and from Sofia (61 hours). ) via Bucharest (49 h) and Chişinău (36 h) which does not require change. These trains usually run 3-4 times a week.

By car

European route E40, the longest European route connecting Calais, France to Ridder, Kazakhstan, passes through Volgograd.

A journey from Moscow by car is just under 1,000 km and takes around 13 hours with short stops. In general, the roads are in good condition, although roadworks are abundant.

Boat

The city is located at the eastern end of the Volga-Don Canal, opened in 1952 to link the two great rivers of southern Russia. River cruises on the Volga operate during the summer months (from the beginning of May to the end of September). Dozens of ships operated by different companies go from Moscow to Astrakhan via Volgograd. One-way cruises can be booked to / from virtually any city along the Volga. Turflot and Infoflot offer tours.

Move

Volgograd's public transport system includes a light rail service known as Volgograd Metrotram .

Volgograd is divided into 8 regions. From north to south:

  • Traktorozavodsky and Krasnooktyabrsky regions - the northernmost and most industrial regions of the city. Factories can be found there, in particular: the Volgograd Tractor Factory (which continued to operate during the siege of Stalingrad, despite the large number of nearby Germans), "Red October" and "Barricades".
  • Dzerzhinskiy district: the airport is here.
  • Central District: a historic center of the city.
  • Voroshilovskiy District - Another historical center of the city. Here is a railway for children.
  • Sovetsky, Kirovsky and Krasnoarmeysky districts: The Volga-Don canal begins and has its first locks in the Krasnoarmeysky district.

The city received its contemporary urban planning after the war, thus lacking the alleys of the old city. If you want, you can find hidden corners of the past. However, when navigating the city, it is best to keep the four parallels in mind:

  • Nulevaya (Zeroth): almost completely traverses the Volga, just beyond the new stadium.
  • Pervaya (First) - It goes from the hydroelectric power station in the extreme north, through the center of the city, where it is called Lenin Avenue and acts as the central street of the city; through the infamous tunnel to Tulak, which was under construction for 20 years; up to a junction with the Vtoraya parallel, near the state university.
  • Vtoraya (Second) - From a junction with the Pervaya parallel near the tractor factory, heading south. This parallel passes through all the regions of the city.
  • Tret'aya (Third): in the north, it becomes the route to Saratov, surrounds the city to the west and connects with the route to Rostov-on-Don. It is planned to expand it to the southern areas of the city.

Google Map public transport directions for Volgograd cannot be trusted. It will often refer to obscure or non-existent Marshrutka hours. To travel between the city center and Mamayev Kurgan, you can take buses 12, 35 or 95. They all run frequently throughout the day. During peak hours (08: 00-20: 00) you will not wait more than 10 minutes for one of those buses (October 2018).

If you want to get to the airport by public transport, take bus 6 into the city center at the Komsomolskaya stop (in front of the Central Market). The bus ride to the airport from the city center takes about an hour.

The huge monument The Motherland Calls (the largest non-religious statue in the world) stands on top of a hill overlooking Volgograd and the Volga River.
