Background

The city has ancient origins: the first mention dates back to 1147, when a church and a small village were founded; an abundant century later the city was razed to the ground by Mongols. At the beginning of the 15th century Vologda entered the area of influence of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, starting its growth as a trading center. It was also the main transit city before the founding of St.Pietroburgo (1703).

Given the length of its history, the city is rich in testimonies: the cathedral of Santa Sofia, built by Ivan the Terrible between 1568 and 1570, and the Spaso-Prilutskij monastery, dating back to 1371, take on particular value.

  • 1 Vologda Kremlin (former Episcopal Court, Вологодский кремль), st. Sergei Orlov, 15 (Kremlin Square), 7 8172 72-25-11. Simple icon time.svgWed-Sun 10: 00-17: 30. The Vologda Kremlin began to be built by Ivan the Terrible in 1565 as a stone fortress for his new northern residence. The fortified territory was supposed to occupy an area of 46 hectares and be located within the modern streets of Mira, Leningradskaya, Oktyabrskaya and the Vologda River - this was 2.1 times the area that exceeded the area of the Moscow Kremlin. However, during the king's lifetime, only two stone walls and 11 towers were erected, and the rest of the fortifications remained wooden. Inside the fortress, the Cathedral of Sophia and the Court of the Bishops were built. In the time of trouble, the wooden part of the Detinets is burned. At the beginning of the 19th century, most of the remaining fortifications were dismantled, as the fortress lost its strategic importance. At this point, the Resurrection Cathedral and the Bell Tower were erected on its territory. What is now called the Vologda Kremlin was its episcopal chapel, where the residence of the Vologda bishops was located. In 1671-1675, the Corte dei Vescovi was surrounded by high walls and a compact complex of buildings from the mid-17th century was formed next to the Cathedral of Saint Sophia. The total area of the "small Kremlin" is 2.3 hectares and the length of the walls is 550 meters. It is now the central attraction of Vologda, which is a reserve-museum.

  • 2 Saint Sophia Cathedral (Софийский собор), st. Sergei Orlov, 15 (Next to the Kremlin). Ecb copyright.svg200 RUB (together with the bell tower). Built between 1568 and 1570, it is the oldest building in Vologda. It no longer functions as a cathedral, but rather as a museum with the exquisite frescoes as a highlight. The oldest surviving stone building in Vologda, built in the image and likeness of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The nearly 60-meter six-column temple is crowned with five domes, which originally had a helmet-like shape. Smooth whitewashed walls and chapters have virtually no decoration, reflecting the northern austerity and laconicism of local architecture. The main work was carried out by order and under the personal supervision of Ivan the Terrible in 1568-1570. However, after the sudden departure of the Tsar in 1571 from Vologda, the cathedral remained unpainted and inanimate. It was only completed in 1587 during the reign of Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich. From 1587 to 1923 - the main cathedral of the city - 12 bishops of Vologda are buried here. In 1612 it suffered greatly for the Polish-Lithuanian interventionists, but in December 1613 it was repaired and rededicated. Inside the church there are well-preserved frescoes made by Yaroslavl icon painters under the direction of Dmitry Plekhanov in 1686-1688. The cathedral houses the largest fresco in Russia on the theme of the Last Judgment: its surface is 400 square meters. The third five-tiered wooden iconostasis in Baroque style from 1724-1738, painted by the Polish painter Maxim Iskritsky, has also survived to the present day. In the following years, the temple was renovated several times and in 1923 it was closed and moved to the local history museum: here was an exhibition on the history of religion and atheism. During the restoration of 1966-1968. the austere and majestic appearance of the 17th century was restored to the cathedral and the extra annexes were dismantled. Now the temple is used in collaboration with the Russian Orthodox Church: it is open for visits in the summer as a museum, and on some religious holidays they are held here.
  • 3 Bell tower of the Saint Sophia Cathedral. The 78-meter bell tower, erected in the pseudo-Gothic style, is already the fifth in a row: the first three were made of wood - only in 1659 was the first made of stone from the dismantled walls of the Kremlin erected. After 10 years, its top was dismantled and a modern, higher one was built on the old foundations. The chimes made in Moscow in 1871 are working on the bell tower. They are connected to a system of bells that survived the 17th century and which are activated several times a day. In summer, an observation platform is open on the upper level of the bell tower, which offers a panoramic view of the historic center of Vologda. To go up, you need to overcome 300 steps along a wooden spiral staircase.
  • 4 Resurrection Cathedral, st. Sergei Orlov, 15, 7 817 272-12-28. Simple icon time.svg8:00-19:00. The simplified Baroque-style five-domed two-story cathedral was erected in 1772-1776. like a hot temple in addition to the cold Hagia Sophia. The temple was built on the site and from the material of the dismantled southeastern tower of the Kremlin. In 1824 a main entrance with columns and pediment was added to the cathedral. In 1938 the temple was closed, the iconostasis was dismantled and the painting was lost. Since 1954 the department of the regional art gallery was located here. Only in December 2016 the temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, the relics of Bishop Anthony were transferred here. In August 2017, restoration work began in the cathedral, which continues to this day, and divine services are performed in the lower church.

The Episcopal Court housed the chambers of the bishops of Vologda, which included several buildings.

  • 5 Economic building. The oldest civil stone building in Vologda, built in 1657-1659. as a state order, it later received its current name. It stands out with a mezzanine above the front door: important documents were kept here, and food, kvass and wine were stored in the cellar. To the left of the building is the Nameless Building and the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross above the Sacred Doors in 1687-1692.
  • 6 Simonovsky building. A large three-story building with a two-level open gallery was erected in 1667-1670. - here was the first stone residence of Bishop Vologda. One was built near the building high church of the Nativity of Christ, which was suppressed in the second half of the 18th century. On the second floor of the building there were the private rooms of the bishop and the halls for solemn receptions. Now the building houses a museum exhibition dedicated to the nature and history of the Vologda region. On the left side of the building it borders theGavrilov building, built at the end of the 17th century as the cell of Archbishop Gabriel. Now there are the ticket offices and the excursion department of the museum.
  • 7 Joseph Corps Chambers. One of the most beautiful buildings of the episcopal court, built in the Baroque style, commissioned by Bishop Joseph Zolotoy in 1764-1769. The building has four halls with high ceilings: green, red, blue and gold - here the rulers were welcomed. Thus, in October 1824, Emperor Alexander I was received in the golden room. The interior decoration of the rooms was very luxurious, but to this day mainly stoves from the 18th century, covered with colored tiles, have survived. The tiles are painted with various themes that can replace a picture book.

Near the southern wall, you can see one summer house of the single-storey wooden bishop with carved plateau, which now houses the museum management. Until the mid-18th century, it was located outside the episcopal court on the cathedral hill.

Monument to the poet K.N. Batyushkov
  • 8 Monument to K.N. Batyushkov, Kremlin Square (Close to the Cathedral of Saint Sophia). A bronze sculpture of a local native, Konstantin Batyushkov, was unveiled on the embankment of the Vologda River in 1987, in honor of the famous poet's 200th anniversary. Sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov portrayed Batyushkov standing on a pedestal in the military uniform of a participant in the Patriotic War of 1812, next to a falling battle horse, which is left for the sake of creativity. On the right, on a separate pedestal, there is a barefoot peasant woman with a pipe, personifying the poet's muse - folk art, and in the distance, another component of the composition, the goddess Athena in a helmet with one lowered shield - symbolizes Batyushkov's military poetry. One of the best monuments in Vologda, a popular place for photo shoots. (Q101996565) su Wikidata

The first wooden church on this site was wooden until the late 18th century and was dedicated to Nicholas the Wonderworker. The stone temple that has survived to this day dates from the second half of the 19th century. On the occasion of a visit to Vologda in 1869 by Emperor Alexander II, the church was rebuilt and rededicated in honor of its heavenly protector, the pavilion bell tower was replaced with a spire one. In 1941-1945. there was a military unit in the church, and after the temple was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1997, it became a regimental temple of the Vologda garrison. Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery

  • 13 Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery, Monastyrskaya Str., 2 (Priluki microdistrict), 7 8172 55-92-24. Simple icon time.svg6:00-20:00. One of the oldest monasteries in the north of Russia, founded by Dmitry Prilutsky, a student of Sergius of Radonezh in 1371, in a bend on the left bank of the Vologda River. The monastery became an important outpost of the Moscow principality in the fight against Novgorod for the northern lands and enjoyed wide support from the princes and tsars of Moscow, from Dmitry Donskoy to Ivan the Terrible. Donated land, money and art objects created in the 15th-16th centuries. one of the largest and most famous in the north of Russia. The abbots of the monastery had a great influence and even participated in the electoral councils for the approval of Boris Godunov on the throne of Moscow in 1598 and Mikhail Romanovich in 1613. The stone construction of the monastery began in the first half of the 16th century, before that all buildings were made of wood, including the walls.
The modern architectural ensemble of the monastery is a combination of the creations of several generations of architects of the 16th-18th centuries. Here, the main features of construction in the north of Russia over the three centuries are intertwined: most of the buildings have survived our days without major changes. During the invasion of Moscow by Napoleon's army in 1812, the monastery kept valuables transported from the largest monasteries in the capital and near Moscow. In 1855, the poet K.N. he was buried in the monastery cemetery. Batyushkov. In Soviet times, the monastery was closed: it housed a prison, a house for the disabled, a museum, but already in 1992 the monastery was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and here resumed monastic life.
The most important relics of the monastery are the icon "Dimitri Prilutsky with his life", painted by the ancient Russian artist Dionysus in 1503, and the Cilician cross, according to legend, brought by the monk Demetrius of Pereslavl and erected on the site of the foundation of the new monastery. The icon was brought by Ivan III in 1503 to a campaign in Kazan, after which it was richly decorated with gold and silver, and the Cilician cross was carried to a campaign in Kazan by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. The miraculous eight cross spikes is decorated with carved images of white bone and covered with silver gilt basma. Now both sanctuaries are kept in the center of Vologda, in the reserve-museum. They were erected at the end of the 16th century and are the oldest stone building in the monastery enclosure, which was made of wood until the mid-17th century. The large doors are decorated with a massive carinated portal, while the smaller ones are decorated with a smaller portal. Inside the sacred doors, you can see old paintings. The Church of the Ascension has a cubic shape with a narrow drum and a helmet-shaped head. Next to it stands a slight bell tower, built in 1730. From the south-west under the bell tower there is a church shop and toilets. To the north-east of the Sacred Door there are two-storey fraternal cells built in the 17th-19th centuries.
Spassky Cathedral of the monastery
  • 15 Spassky Cathedral. The first stone church of the monastery is Vologda, erected in 1537-1542. on the site of a previous wooden church destroyed by fire. The majestic two-storey five-domed temple is built according to the traditions of Moscow architecture of the first half of the 16th century, but with the modesty and laconicism of the facades inherent in the Russian north. The cathedral is surrounded by a gallery on three sides and three massive apses border it on the eastern side. The main decoration of the cathedral is a massive 17th century front porch with a staircase leading to the second floor. The portico contains in its construction pillars in the shape of a pitcher which support double arches with a suspended weight. From the north to the cathedral is a sacristy tent built in the 18th century on the site of Dimitry Prilutsky's cell, and from the east, according to legend, a well he dug. The relics of the monk Demetrius rest in the cathedral. In Soviet times, the cathedral was used as a residence, the ancient iconostasis and the murals were lost. Currently the cathedral has been transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and the restoration of the lost iconostasis is underway.
The first bell tower from 1537-1542, adjacent to the northwestern corner of the cathedral, has not survived, but the remains of its lower level can be seen. A new taller bell tower with the Church of Alessio, erected in 1639-1654. But its hipped roof was removed in 1720 and replaced with a new curly roof with a spire.
  • 16 Vvedenskaya church with refectory. The Vvedenskaya church with refectory, kelarskaya and clean rooms was built in the middle of the 16th century. The square temple, erected no later than 1623, in the basement, is covered with a three-tiered kokoshnik pyramid with a keel, and the upper tier and drum are decorated with a wide patterned belt. A covered gallery leads to the refectory from the Spassky Cathedral. On the second floor there is a large hall with barrel vaults for common monastic meals, while on the ground floor of the refectory there are the service rooms.
  • 17 Church of the Assumption from the Alexander-Kushtsky Monastery. The oldest surviving wooden tent roof church in Russia, created in 1519. It differs in constructive completeness and accuracy of proportions, picturesque hipped roofs and barrel roofs. It was transported here as a monument of wooden architecture in 1962 from the Alexander-Kushtsky monastery, and the ancient icons of the church iconostasis were brought to the Vologda Museum Reserve collection. The church was renovated in 1966.

The stone walls of the monastery with a length of 950 meters with 5 battle towers were erected according to all the rules of the fortification in the second half of the 17th century. The walls are up to seven meters high and more than two meters thick. In the center of the southwestern wall overlooking the left bank of the Vologda River is the Water Tower. This is the only tower with a passage door through which the monks brought water to the monastery. From inside you can climb the tower and take a walk along the monastery walls. To the left of the Water Tower there is one Torre del Mulino whitewashed octahedral decorated with decorative niches and columns in relief. The remaining three towers in the 19th century were painted with red-yellow-orange vertical stripes, which from the outside give the monastery the appearance of a fairytale fortress. To the right of the Water Tower is the South Tower higher, which has 16 sides and reaches 20 meters in height: its upper level is decorated with arches in relief and the loopholes are in the shape of a keyhole. There Vologda Tower it is not similar to it, but has only 12 faces. There Belozerskaya Tower, located on the north corner, is not distinguished by its special architectural delights, but it is also a powerful defensive element of the monastery walls.
