To know
Geographical notes
This ancient Russian city is located at the confluence of the Sukhona and Yug rivers, hence its name: Устюг = Устье Юга = Mouth of the Yug.
When to go
Russian tourists flock to Veliky Ustyug in winter, as it hosts Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost, the Russian Santa Claus), but the architecture and history alone make this destination a place worth visiting.
Lovers of the latter, as well as the beautiful and harsh nature of the north, it is preferable to visit Veliky Ustyug instead in the summer.
Background
It received its title "Grande" which was given to the city by the Tsar for its historical and commercial importance. Ustyug was on one of the most important routes for the conquest and development of the lands of Komi-Perm, of the Urals and up to Siberia. As a result, it was the home and birthplace of many Russian explorers. Subsequently, the importance of the city decreased considerably. Fortunately, Ustyug's excellent ecclesiastical architectural heritage has escaped Soviet destruction and abuse, preserving its wealth of 18th-century Northern Baroque-style sacred architecture.
Despite being a difficult place to reach, in the last ten to fifteen years the city has experienced a real tourist boom, albeit of a seasonal nature.
