Värmland lies in the west on the border with Norway. In the north lies part of the mountain range Cologne, with mountain peaks from 500 to 700 meters above the sea. The south of Värmland is hilly, flat land, the mountains are no higher than 50 meters above the surrounding area.
The north bank of the Vänern belongs to Värmland and most of the rivers flow into the Vänern or one of its tributaries. The others flow into the Dalälven or the Norwegian Glomma.

In Värmland will Swedish spoken, but most residents understand English, some also understand German.

It is advisable to travel by car. Värmland can be reached from Oslo and Stockholm via the E18, from Gothenburg via trunk road 45.
