Wakefield was founded in 1830 by Irish, Scottish and English immigrants. Wakefield is a small town in the Municipality of La Pêche. The town is named after the town of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England. Wakefield is on the west bank of the Gatineau River and the city is located thirty-five kilometers northwest of Ottawa, Ontario. Wakefield is a city that is unique in that it is a predominantly English-speaking city in a predominantly French-speaking province.
