Walt Disney World Resort is a complex of six amusement parks located nearOrlando in Florida to United States. Magic kingdom, Epcot, Disney's hollywood studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom are four theme parks. Disney's Typhoon Lagoon and Disney's Blizzard Beach are seasonally open water parks.

Understand

General

The most important thing to understand about Walt Disney World Resort is that this place is designed to keep everyone entertained. With family, friends, as a couple, there are attractions made for all ages and all genders. Foodies, sun worshipers, world travelers, thrill seekers, comedy buffs, movie buffs, sports buffs, nightclub buffs and history buffs will find plenty of ways to have fun there.

Of course if you have kids the best part of your vacation at Walt Disney World Resort will be keeping them happy. This is when you really understand Walt Disney's vision: a place where kids and parents can have fun together.

Walt Disney World Resort is huge, it's a multi-day resort destination. Each of its four theme parks is large enough to occupy visitors for a full day (often two depending on attendance). Unless you live nearby, four days is considered the minimum length of visit to even begin to experience the resort; some people stay two weeks!

Traveling to Walt Disney World Resort can be a sort of pilgrimage for many American families. The typical visit involves flying to the Orlando International Airport, taking the bus to a Disney resort hotel, spending about a week without leaving the Disney property, and heading home. There are endless variations possible, but that's still what most people mean when they say “go to Disney World”.

Example of "Cast Members", employees of the complex.

Everything at Walt Disney World Resort is carefully constructed and choreographed to preserve that feeling of an ideal world. Company jargon frames every aspect of customer service as part of the 'show': employees are 'Cast Members', visitors are 'guests' and every prop and costume must be fully integrated into the character during that he's on stage. Disney considers the customer experience to be its top priority and their customer service is almost always flawless. You will never find excessively dirty trash on the streets or bathrooms, and anything damaged is removed or repaired immediately. The streets are almost sparkling and the buildings look new no matter what time of day or year.

Although some people find this attention to detail artificial, the vast majority of visitors are happy to immerse themselves in this environment. Still, the realities of Walt Disney World Resort can be stark: long lines, sweltering heat, rude customers, and expensive merchandise are common. There are ways to avoid the worst elements (including by carefully choosing when to visit), but if things go wrong, you can count on cast members to try to fix things.

Many first-time visitors try to do a lot of activities during their stay. Unless attendance is low, this is a sure recipe for coming out of it exhausted. You need to have a basic schedule in mind, but you need to be flexible to accommodate closed rides, full restaurants, special events, or just change of mind. If the crowds get too big or if the weather gets too hot, savvy guests staying on-site return to their hotels to relax, grab a snack, or swim, then return later in the day. Try to stick to a rigid schedule so as not to frustrate yourself and your family. You won't go to Walt Disney World to be frustrated, right?

With careful basic planning, an open mind, and a playful attitude, a visit to Walt Disney World Resort can be whatever you want: fulfilling, exciting, relaxing, enlightening, or just plain fun!

Story

Disneyland (California) was an absolute success. Walt Disney had created not only an amusement park, where children could ride in front of their parents, but also the first real amusement park in the world, a place where children and adults could have fun. together.

Roy O. Disney (right holding a map) inspects the grounds of the future Walt Disney World Resort in 1964.

After Disneyland opened in 1955, Disney realized that the space available at Anaheim was too small. He had his playpen, but he and his Imagineers were always coming up with new ideas. Ideas he just couldn't fit into at Disneyland. In the 1960s, Walt began looking on the East Coast for a place that had enough space to hold any ideas his team could imagine. He found such a place in central Florida, southwest of the city ofOrlando. Here along the new Interstate 4 there was a lot of space, more than what would be needed for a single theme park. Walt had bigger ideas in mind for his “Florida Project”.

After having bought more than 11,000 hectares of land in secret, Walt announced his plans for Disney World. Of course, a theme park would be built - a Magic kingdom at the north end of the property. But to get there from I-4, guests have to go through the real centerpiece of the project: Epcot.

Epcot was Walt Disney's most important idea: a real city with 20,000 real people living and working there, using the most advanced technologies to grow food, provide transportation, and improve the quality of life. Much of the technology was already in use at Disneyland - PeopleMovers and monorails, for example - but it wouldn't be rides. Epcot was to be a place where the ideas of the Imagineers were put into practice. But Walt Disney died in December 1966, just as the Florida project came to fruition. Without Walt to bring the project to fruition, the company's board of directors refused to undertake the ambitious Epcot projects. But Walt's brother Roy O. Disney insisted the whole project go ahead, starting with the Magic Kingdom. Roy changed the name of the project to Walt Disney World. It will be a complex in homage to the vision of Walt Disney.

Magic kingdom opened on 1er October 1971 with two hotels, a campsite and two golf courses nearby. It was an immediate success, single-handedly leading to the development of the Orlando area as the nation's busiest vacation destination. Although Roy died before the end of the year, he had managed to get his brother's latest project off the ground.

Walt Disney World's first decade quickly passed and by the time of celebrating its 10e anniversary in 1981, a new theme park is under construction. This is Epcot, although it no longer looks like Walt Disney's original plans. Instead of its city, EPCOT is a permanent “world exhibition”, combining Future World, made up of large pavilions dedicated to human progress, with a global showcase of meticulous recreations of foreign lands. Epcot opened in 1982 and it was followed by a park combining amusement park and film studio called Disney-MGM Studios (Disney's hollywood studios) in 1989, then by Disney's Animal Kingdom, a zoological theme park, in 1998.

Over the years, many resort hotels and leisure activities have been added to support the increased footfall of the resort. Two large water parks were added in 1989 and 1995. One area of the property, which began as Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village, evolved into the Disney Village Marketplace, then became Downtown Disney and is now Disney Springs , a fun site for adults.

Weather

As in all Central florida, the climate of Walt Disney World Resort is humid and subtropical. From May to October the climate is hot and sticky, while from November to April it is mild and drier. Visitors to higher latitudes are often surprised by the intensity of the summer sun in Florida. From June to September, thunderstorms in the late afternoon are very frequent; plan your stay accordingly. That said, weather issues are well known at Walt Disney World Resort and there are several ways to deal with the situation.

Inclement weather can often result in the temporary closure of outdoor rides and shows. In the case of rides, they will reopen when the weather improves and your selections FastPass remain valid even if your reservation time has expired. Concerts can be either delayed or canceled. In addition, inclement weather could be to your advantage, as some visitors move away from outdoor areas or leave parks.

When to come?

Christmas tree in Magic Kingdom.

There were times of the year when the parks were relatively deserted, but that's not really the case anymore. Now they just vary from "moderately busy" to "full". Still, deciding when to go is a matter of compromise. If you come when it is less crowded it is a good bet that you will have cool nights. Conversely, when it is crowded, you will also have scorching summer days.

The peak periods of attendance are at the end of December, from mid-June to mid-August and from mid-February to mid-April. Why ? This is when most American children are on school vacation. If you have kids, you may have no choice but to go during these busy times. You could wait two hours before getting on rides like Splash Mountain and you're going to pay more because it's summer. In summer, you can also listen to the children complaining about the heat. However, parks are guaranteed to open late and more rides will be operational.

If your schedule allows you some flexibility, avoid these peak periods. The lowest attendance is in October, November (before Thanksgiving), in December but before Christmas and in January. This can be a great time to go; queues are short and prices low, but keep in mind that rides may be closed for maintenance reasons and parks have reduced opening hours. In the winter it is often too cold to go to the water parks and you will need a coat in the evening.

The weeks between Easter and Memorial Day are another slow time, as are the months of August and September; both periods provide a good balance of price, crowd, temperature, and hours of operation, but you may need to take the kids out of school if they come with you.

Be aware that from mid-December to February, mid-June to July, during the first 2-3 weeks of October, and on Thanksgiving Day (in some cases), groups of tourists from North American countries South, mainly Brazil and Argentina are present in large numbers at Walt Disney World and other Orlando theme parks.

Of course, you might want to coordinate your trip with a special event. Epcot has events that last for two months. Magic Kingdom is organizing two special events for an unforgettable holiday: the Halloween party and the Christmas parties with Mickey. These events, which allow you to stay in the park beyond the usual closing time, can cost up to 100 $ per person, but tickets are limited so the crowds are manageable. Speaking of Christmas, December is perhaps the most magical time of the year at Walt Disney World. The whole resort goes out of its way to be fully decorated, with huge themed Christmas trees in each of the parks.

To speak

Like most places in the United States, English is the default language throughout Walt Disney World Resort. The majority of World Showcase Cast Members at Epcot are nationals of the country and will be fluent in their native language as well as English. The other Cast Members can also be bilingual or trilingual; All employees can be identified by language signs on their badges, along with the flags of the languages they speak. Spanish is also widely spoken in Florida and the United States as a whole. Spanish speakers will have no problem navigating the resort.

All four theme parks have an information center called "Guest Relations", located near the main entrances. Cast Members, often multilingual, can answer all your questions.

Disney's Ears to the World is an audio guide that provides foreign language translations (French, German, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish) of the dialogues of certain attractions. It can be hired from the “Guest Relations” service, but their number is limited; a deposit of 25 $ will be debited and refunded when the audio guide returns.

Visitors with visual impairments can borrow a Disney's Handheld Device. It is a portable wireless device that provides audio descriptions of most of the resort's shows and attractions. Disney also provides guides in Braille. You can get either at the Guest Relations of any park for a refundable deposit of 25 $. Most restaurants now offer menus in Braille and you can always ask a Cast Members to read the menu to you if necessary.

Guests with hearing impairments can also use the Disney's Handheld Device ; it provides closed captioning and listening services for most attractions and shows. The refundable deposit of 25 $ still applies. Some attractions may have video captioning (free) in hand, reflective, or video; ask a Cast Members. One park per day will have live performers for certain shows; send an email to [email protected] to know the schedule. Interpreters are available for special events and dinner shows by appointment at least two weeks in advance. Cast Members with knowledge of American Sign Language can be identified by the appropriate symbol on their badges.

Deaf and hard of hearing customers can have any Disney room equipped with visual alerts and TTY; Dial it 1 407-824-4321 (ATS: 1 407-827-5141).
