Wedding and Gesundbrunnen are two districts of the central district of Berlin.

To know

In the mid-eighteenth century Gesundbrunnen was transformed into a popular spa thanks to springs that emerged in Mount Humbdolt while in Wedding games of chance and prostitution spread. In 1864 a drug production unit was set up in Wedding which remained the property of Bayer until 2006. In 1904 the Rotaprint printing house employed more than 1,000 people. Wedding developed into a proletarian suburb known at the time of the Weimar Republic as Red Wedding.

Gesundbrunnen followed a similar fate due to the constant exodus from the surrounding countryside of job seekers. Huge condominiums were built in which workers lived in inhumane conditions.

The Gartenstadt_Atlantic is a residential complex of 50 houses one of the best examples of modernism. It was built in the 1920s to a design by the architect Rudolf Fränkel in the immediate vicinity of the Berlin Gesundbrunnen station (Behm corner Bellermannstraße) by the publisher Karl Wolffsohn.

Starting from 1920 the inhabitants of the two districts clashed several times with the militants of National Socialism.

After World War II, Wedding and Gesundbrunnen were assigned to the French sector. The wall that separated them from East Berlin ran through Bernauer Straße. The erection of the wall led to a degradation of the neighborhoods. Its inhabitants moved to the western districts and they were replaced by immigrants from Turkey and the Middle East. Still the population of Wedding is made up of a good 30% of immigrants. It remained a poor neighborhood. The fall of the wall did not lead to an economic boom that characterized the adjacent Prenzlauer Berg district. Its tourist interest is also limited. The crime has spread to the point that DHL stopped delivering to the area in 2016.
