Wemding is one on the east Ries edge lying city in Bavaria.

The city has had the title since 1972 Recognized resort. Wemding became known for its well-preserved medieval old town with stately town houses, the historic market square and the relatively well-preserved city wall. The pilgrimage church is a particularly popular attraction Maria Brünnlein in the west of the city.

getting there

By bus

The nearest train station is that 1 Otting-Weilheim station on the route DonauwörthTreuchtlingen, which is served hourly by Regional Express trains. From there, Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings, the 730 buses go to Wemding, the times of which are coordinated with those of the trains. From direction Nordlingen you can take the 504 bus to Wemding. Some buses must be ordered by telephone in good time before departure. Timetables and further information are available from Verkehrsgemeinschaft Donau-Ries.

In the street

Coming from Nördlingen, Wemding can be reached on a well-developed state road. The road from Monheim and B2 is also easy to drive on. Another possibility is from Oettingen.

By bicycle

Wemding is on the bike path From crater to crater, who does a lap in the Nördlinger Ries. From summer 2021, the city can also travel through the 200 km long GeoRadweg Altmühltal can be achieved.

On foot

Wemding is located on the Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James.

Thanks to its very manageable size, the old town can easily be explored on foot. The Maria Brünnlein pilgrimage church is a 20-minute walk away.

  • 1  City parish church St. Emmeram, Pfarrhofgasse 4.
  • 2  Pilgrimage basilica Maria Brünnlein, Oettinger Strasse 103. The pilgrimage church was built in rococo style between 1748 and 1782. Holy Mass on weekdays at 9 a.m., on Sundays at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.
  • 3  Donau-Ries Art Museum, Jahnstrasse 1. Price: Adults € 4, schoolchildren and students € 1, children up to 10 years free.
  • North of the city is the 4 Time pyramid. The art project by the artist Manfred Laber began in 1993, 1200 years after Wemding was founded. Every ten years another cement block is placed on the concrete foundation. Since the finished pyramid will consist of 120 such blocks, it will take a total of 1200 years to complete.

  • 2  Wemdinger light plays, Theaterstrasse 1. The small cinema with a hall is one of the last hotel cinemas.
  • The legend trail has existed in Wemding since 2016. The hiking trail starts at Johannisgraben near the old town of Wemdingen. There are also enough parking spaces available there. Several legends from the history of the Fuchsienstadt are told over a distance of 14 km.

Practical advice

trips

  • In about 20 km away Nordlingen you can marvel at the almost completely preserved old town including the city wall that can be walked all around. A climb to the 90 meter high tower of St. George's Church and a visit to the Ries Krater Museum are worthwhile. The Bavarian Railway Museum is also worth a visit.
  • In Harburg (13 km south, approx. 15 min. By bus line 700) the Harburg Castle can be visited.
  • Other hiking trails: Monheimer Alb 17 (Huisheim), Bock circuit (Harburg)
