Map of Werben (Elbe)

background

Werben (Elbe) has a long history. Werben already had city rights when the frogs were croaking in the Spree swamps, where Berlin later emerged. However, advertising has hardly grown properly since then. Until 2009 it was the smallest city in Saxony-Anhalt and also the smallest Hanseatic city at all. The location near the Elbe below the mouth of the Havel had strategic importance since the Middle Ages and led to multiple destruction of the city, most recently in the Napoleonic wars. Then in the 1830s Werben was rebuilt quite uniformly with two-story Biedermeier houses, from which some medieval buildings such as the churches or remnants of the city wall protrude.

In keeping with the character of the Biedermeier cityscape, Werben is trying today to raise its profile with events typical of the time (Biedermeier market, historical Christmas market).

getting there

By plane

By train

Advertise has no rail connection. The next train station is in Seehausen, about 20 km to the west. From there it goes on by bus. Sometimes, arriving by public transport is only for real timetable junkies.

By bus

The bus routes 954 and 955 to Werben occasionally run from Seehausen, plus the 964 from Iden. Some of the connections must be requested in advance (so-called "call bus"). Pre-registration up to 2 hours before departure on 03901 - 304030.

Realistically, it is advisable to use your own vehicle for the journey, be it a bicycle.

In the street

Those who visit Werben have slowed down long before they arrive. The next federal road is the East Elbe running B 107. Here you have to use a ferry across the Elbe at Sandau or Havelberg. To the west it is a good 25 km to the B 189 (Stendal-Wittenberge). Motorways ... forget about it.

With the wheel

Advertise is on Elbe cycle path.

By boat

From the Räbel district, a ferry leads over the Elbe Havelberg.

mobility

The draisine with wooden spoke wheels would be in proper style. But you can also easily explore the place on foot. The distances are very clear.

Also noteworthy are the remains of a medieval, formerly much more extensive colored glazing, which was put together in the choir windows. various

There are around 20 stork nests in Werben, including on the town hall, on the St. Spiritus Chapel and at the Elbtor.

activities

Biedermeier markets that are held in the city are worth visiting. A Biedermeier summer on the first weekend in July brings the same flair as the Christmas market (on the third weekend in Advent) with a claim to authenticity, many participants in old costumes, torchlight and candlelight, arts and crafts and handicrafts. Dispensing with electrical lighting, LääästChristmas, Helene Fischer & Co provide an atmospheric setting that is also worth a long detour.

Werben is used by numerous white storks as a nesting place, which enliven the otherwise quiet city with their offspring during the stork season from April to August. On the Elbtor there is a viewing platform from which you can watch the animals very well. An exhibition on the history of the city can be seen inside the city gate.

shop

There are everyday necessities and groceries.

There is a wide range of arts and crafts, textiles, pottery and the like on the Biedermeier markets.

Better to stay healthy. The next hospital with a 24/7 emergency room is in Havelberg, Domherrnstrasse 10. In case of doubt, as there is no ferry, you can get to Seehausen, Albert-Steinert-Platz 1, faster.
