Geologically, the Westfjords are among the oldest land masses in Iceland. The basalt here was formed over 15 million years ago. What we see today are high plateaus and deep fjords that were formed by the glaciers of the last ice age. Due to the rather harsh climate, drift ice fields in winter, sometimes you can still see them in summer, the area is agriculturally uninteresting.

Tourist Attractions
- 1 Dynjandi. The highest waterfall in the Westfjords is at the end of the northernmost arm of Arnarfjörður. The 100 m high waterfall is "below" about 60 m wide. There are five smaller falls further downstream.
- 2 Látrabjarg. The bird rock par excellence, and at the same time the westernmost tip of Iceland and Europe. It is 14 km long and up to 444 m high. Puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and alke as well as the fulmar can be observed here.
