Geographical notes

Not far from the Pacific coast of the state and about 125 kilometers north of Vancouver.

The ski area consists of two facing mountain ranges, the Whistler and the Blackcomb, separated by a valley. Together, Whistler and Blackcomb form the largest ski resort in North America with over 33,000 m², spanning over 50% greater than Vail, in Colorado.

Whistler-Balckcomb is served by a system of 38 lifts which allows the transport of 65,507 people per hour. The transportation capacity is the largest in all of North America. There are more than two hundred slopes, on which there are 19 refreshment points for a total of 6540 seats. Outside the ski season, part of the ski lifts and areas make up the Mountain

Background

Whistler Mountain opened to the public in February 1966, with a gondola, a double chairlift ("The Red Chair") and an anchor ski lift. The success of the ski resort and the competition from nearby Blackcomb sparked a race for modernization to accommodate an increasing number of tourists. With the addition of new lifts there was also a real building revolution in the heart of the city of Whistler, with the construction of hotels, restaurants, bars, residences and holiday homes. Whistler's expansion was such that it incorporated the neighboring village of Alta Lake.

In 1997 the Intrawest company, already owner of the Blackcomb ski area, completed the acquisition of the Whistler ski lifts. In 2003, the two ski resorts became part of an integrated system of ski slopes and ski lifts, with a single ticket. Since December 2008, the opening of the "Peak to Peak" cable car allows you to transfer from one mountain to another without the need to return to the valley.

In 2010 it hosted some alpine skiing competitions of the XXI Winter Olympic Games and the X Winter Paralympic Games.
