Whyalla is a city in South Australia on Spencer Gulf, 76 km south of Port Augusta.
The city was a very important location for iron and steel production and in its heyday had the largest shipyard in Australia, a coking plant, a steel mill and up to 33,000 inhabitants. Today there is only the only manufacturer of railway sleepers left there, the population has dropped to around 21,000.
