background

The Wild Coast on the coast of the Indian Ocean is bounded by the region Eastern Cape Midlands in the north and from the region Frontier Country. The coast adjoining it to the southeast is the Sunshine Coast

The Wild Coast region is predominantly inhabited by the Xhosa and was part of the homeland Transkei. Therefore the hinterland of the region is not very developed, the rocky coast is still quite untouched and offers numerous cliffs and beaches.

Nelson Mandela was born in this region, he comes from the village Qunu near Mthata.

language

Xhosa is spoken all along the Wild Coast. In the few restaurants and hotels, English is of course also spoken, and very occasionally other European languages. In the more rural areas, English is becoming increasingly difficult to get through, and you either speak a little Xhosa or help yourself with your hands and feet.
